Montefilia 16/1

The first runner that could have a part to play in this season's Group One Melbourne Cup is the David Payne trained Montefilia who heads into the race off the back of a fine run in the Caulfield Cup.

A horse that has been mixed when it comes to distances throughout her career tried between a mile and 1m4f, her best runs have come when she has been stepped up in trip.

The five year old mare was last seen finishing a superb fourth of 18 in the Group One Caulfield Cup, coming from almost last to only be beaten by a length.

Her pedigree suggests the further she goes the better she will be with her Dam's Sire Shirocco providing superb national hunt offspring in the UK.

She should improve for the step up to two miles with how well she stayed on last time out from way back and she is a big each way player if drawn accordingly.

Vow And Declare 25/1

At a slightly bigger price but coming from a similar form line is the seven year old Vow And Declare who landed this event in 2019 and could be weighted to strike again.

Having already been nibbled at in the ante-post market from 33s into 25/1, he is one of the few horses in the field that has proven form in this race over the two miles and that could mean a lot.

Stepped back up to 1m4f on his last three runs, he has put in his best efforts of the season when third of 15 in a Conditions event at Flemington and then over the same C&D this time in a Grade Three Handicap event he was a close fifth of 11 only just over a length behind the winner.

Last time out the Group One winner was a good sixth of 18 in the Caulfield Cup only two lengths behind the winner maybe just being beaten for a bit of speed, but going back up in trip where staying looks his game makes him a player, especially dropping down the weights of late.

Each way contender.
