ITV Racing Tips for Today - Saturday 16th May

Saturday's live ITV Racing sees a bumper day of action from Newmarket and Newbury, featuring the Group One Lockinge Stakes. With a competitive field of 10 going to field for the big race, supported by group, listed races and some strong handicaps. We've taken a deeper look at all eight live races and picked out our tips and selections for the afternoon.

Kalpana 5/4

A talented mare who’s won two group one’s in her career and was last seen powering away in the Champion Fillies’ and Mares’ Stakes at Ascot. Makes her seasonal return in calmer waters and although shouldering a penalty here she sets a strong standard and has the class to get her season off to a winning start.

Gorgeous Mr George 18/1

Will relish this step back up to a mile, having his best runs of last campaign over this trip and looks incredibly well handicapped off a mark of 76. Will come on for the recent reappearance effort and a mark of 76 looks lenient, especially with a 5lbs claimer in the saddle.

Esna 9/1

Looks a big price for this compared to Sacred Ground, finishing just a length behind that rival at Newmarket. She shaped as if she needed the run and is a big framed filly. This more conventional galloping track will suit her better and her juvenile form rates as some of the best efforts in this contest. Will improve for her debut outing and looks overpriced at 9/1.

Damysus 3/1

Has found his niche since being dropped in trip. Clearly not staying in the 2025 Derby, a drop to 9 and 10 furlongs has seen him win his last three runs, including a demolition job at Newmarket in the Earl Of Sefton Stakes last time out. The Gosden yard has won the last 2 renewals of the race and with Damysus having some of the best form and a recent run under his belt, they can knock up a Lockinge Stakes hat-trick.

Silver Ghost 6/1

Goes well here and shaped nicely on seasonal comeback to be 3rd in a handicap over C+D two weeks ago. Nudged down 1lbs in the weights for that run, she’ll come on for that effort and a handicap rating of 91 doesn’t leave her looking badly treated.

Wise Approach 6/1

Looks a little too big at 6/1 to be left out of this, returning to the course and distance that saw him win a Group One last season. Looked like he needed his first run of the season at Ascot and the Charlie Appleby yard have started to notch up some winners again after a quiet spell. Carries a penalty but brings the best form to the race. Stable won this last year.

Tabby 7/1

Yet to race on turf but returned from a long lay off with a good 2nd on the all weather and has since backed that up with a win at Southwell. Not harshly hit at the weights for that win and connections opt for a 3lbs claimer in the saddle to take further weight off her back. Relatively lightly raced for her age and can continue her progression in handicaps now switched to turf.

Al Azd 5/1

Improved for being gelded and broke a string of 2nd place finishes when getting off the mark at Southwell last month. Backed that effort up in emphatic style when bolting up in a handicap off a mark of 85. A 7lbs rise in the weights doesn’t look too harsh and the 3rd has come out and placed at York midweek. Progressive and still has scope for improvement off a mark of 92 for Roger Varian.
