ITV Racing Tips for Today - Saturday 9th May

It's another day of ITV racing with the Oaks and Derby trials coming from Lingfield while Ascot host their Victoria Cup Day card. With Haydock featuring the Swinton Handicap Hurdle, there's a good mix of jumps and flat action on offer. We've gone through all the live races to pick out our tips and selections for the afternoon.

Sweet Reward 8/1

Some mixed form last season has seen his handicap mark drop to more manageable level now and with all his career wins coming over this distance this step back up in trip will bring out the best in him. Hinted at a return to form at Epsom with a 2nd last time out and connections look to capitalise on the run turning him out quickly. Well handicapped and gets conditions to suit.

Alnilam 40/1

Has been over fences this season but with mixed success, only winning once over the bigger obstacles. Had some nice form over hurdles previously, including a 2nd in a Morebattle hurdle and doesn’t look badly treated back over hurdles off a mark of 137. The Olly Murphy yard has won 2 of the last 5 renewals of this race.

Cameo 10/3

Looks in need of this step up in trip having finished well over 8 furlongs at the Curragh on her seasonal comeback last month. The combination of O’Brien and Moore has been in good form of late and there looks to be more to come from this filly now getting a stiffer stamina test.

Song N Dance 17/2

Steadily progressive last Autumn and through the winter, finding her feet to win a novice event and a handicap over a mile. Returned from a break to be a creditable 2nd at Southwell last month and a 2lbs nudge up the weights doesn’t look like it’ll curb her improvement. Nicely fit from the comeback run, she’s well treated and can continue her progress in this sphere.

Maltese Cross 11/4

Lines up for this Derby trial with two wins from his three career outings, making a very pleasing return to the track to win at Newmarket during the Craven meeting to win a valuable novice race. The form looks strong with the 2nd coming out and filling the same spot in a listed race since. Can take a step forward for the recent run and looks like this step up in trip will suit.

The Wizard Of Eye 20/1

Won this race in 2024 under Tom Marquand for Charlie Fellowes off a mark of 99 but has only been seen four times on the track since then. Showed he retains ability with a good 3rd at Newcastle on the all weather back in September and his form off the back of a break has been strong through his career. Well handicapped, goes well fresh and has a good high draw, can outrun his odds under Neil Callan.

Copacabana Sands 15/8

A listed and Group three winner for Michael O'Callaghan in Ireland last season and interestingly has made the switch to the Andrew Balding yard now. Rated 4lbs clear of his nearest rival here, she brings smart form to the race and with the Balding yard in form she can hit the ground running for her new stable.

Valedictory 7/4

Scored in a novice event last October and made an encouraging seasonal debut to be a close 3rd in a handicap over 10 furlongs, got outpaced and ran rallied well to only be beaten a neck. Shapes like this step up in trip will unlock further improvement and still looks well treated off a mark of 87 for the Gosden yard.

Christian David 8/1

Looked in need of his first two runs of the year, fading out of contention quite tamely but bounced back to form with a good 3rd at Newmarket behind two useful rivals. Retains a mark of 91 for that effort and this slightly shorter trip should play to his strengths.
