BetVictor Veterans' Handicap Chase (13.20 Newbury) Fortescue

A hardy stayer back in the day, it’s interesting to see Fortescue have his attentions turned to Veteran’s events now.

Running in open company this season, he’s not been disgraced against younger rivals, coming 4th in a Welsh National Trial and 2nd in a deep ground contest at Haydock. His last run left a lot to be desired but quick ground at Sandown likely wasn’t too his liking.

bet365 Handicap Hurdle (13.42 Kelso) The Kalooki Kid

An unexposed looking 6 year old who scored over 2.5 miles in a novice event on soft ground before handling a drop in trip and faster ground at Newcastle to defy a penalty.

Wasn’t disgraced in Grade Two company in a race that looks like hot form behind Jeriko Du Reponet and recent winner Lump Sum.

Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase (13.55 Newbury) Jetoile

Lightly raced this season, Jetoile has only been seen twice so far this campaign but has looked in smart form. Winning the Old Roan chase at Aintree on his seasonal comeback, he then ran a creditable 4th in a Grade Three at Cheltenham in January.

A mark of 149 looks stiff enough but connections have smartly employed a 5lbs claimer in the saddle to help lighten the load and he provides a bit of class this season.

Premier Novices’ Hurdle (14.17 Kelso) Brucio

Jango Baie sets a strong looking standard at the top of the market but his form looks shaky and he failed to land the odds in a listed race when last seen.

He looks vulnerable and it’s interesting to note that Brucio makes the trip over from Ireland for Simon Crawford off the back of an impressive listed handicap win. She looks a solid progressive sort and gets a huge chunk of weight from the favourite.

Always worth noting an Irish raider and the trip and conditions look ideal for her to cause a potential upset on the favourite.

Cheltenham Festival Money Back H’cap Chase (14.35 Doncaster) Malystic

An impressive 22/23 season saw him win three times including a Grade Three event at Ayr at the end of the campaign.

Things have been failing to click this season however and he was well beaten in his first two outings, however he seemed to turn a corner when last seen over course and distance with the removal of a hood.

Morebattle Hurdle (14.50 Kelso) Anyharminasking

The Morebattle Hurdle can be a tricky puzzle to unpick but one that looks overpriced in the market at a general 16/1 is Anyharminasking for Jon O’Neill.

His form has been a little in and out but on his best showings this season he looks a to have a good each way chance in this. Coming 2nd on seasonal comeback in a handicap event over 2 miles, he only found subsequent Grade Two winner Nemean Lion too good.

Not quite good enough to get involved in the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham, he then put in a good run behind Get A Tonic at Newbury over 2.5 miles, the trip likely testing his stamina too much.

Daily Price Boosts Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle (15.10 Doncaster) Lunar Discovery

An improving mare who scored twice over the minimum trip in novice events with a fair bit in hand. Upped in trip and grade for a listed contest at Haydock at the end of last year she stayed on well to find only Pawapuri too good in the finish.

She’s being kept at listed level by connections but moves up to three miles. Better ground will likely suit her and she certainly shaped like she’d be capable of staying the trip of 3 miles.

Premier Chase (15.25 Kelso) Monbeg Genius

A seriously progressive chaser in novice company last season, winning three chases before an impressive 3rd place finish in a hot renewal of the Ultima at the Cheltenham Festival.

A disappointing return to action at Ascot saw him pull up after making a juddering error but he looked more himself in the Coral Gold Cup to be 3rd in again what looked a strong renewal.

Grimthorpe Handicap Chase (15.40 Doncaster) Undersupervision

A course and distance winner who ran a stormer in this race last year to be a close 2nd.

A mixed campaign this season has seen him only complete in one of his three outings however it still feels like a strong case can be made for him here. On seasonal comeback he ran in a deep race and likely needed the outing and shaped much better to be 3rd at Cheltenham back in November.
