Who To Follow At Newbury On Saturday - 17/07/21

Horse To Follow - Derab

In the Listed bet365 Stakes at Newbury on Saturday we believe that the exciting Derab for trainer John Gosden is massively overpriced at his current odds of 9/2 and is only likely to get shorter.

Having been taken out of his latest engagement and jocked up for this event already it looks highly likely he will turn up to this event.

As for the horse itself, the son of Sea The Stars has a superb pedigree and has always been destined for greatness being a half brother to the queen of racing Enable.

Seen four times during his career, the three year old was seen once as a juvenile at Ascot over 7f and he finished a narrow second to the talented La Barrosa.

Saved for this term he made his seasonal debut over a mile at Newbury where again he had to settle for runner up, this time behind the Group One Falmouth Stakes winner Snow Lantern.

On his third career start he finally got off the mark when bolting up on good to soft ground at Newmarket by close to seven lengths.

Off the back of that smart run he was sent into the Group One Prix Du Jockey Club and finished a respectable eighth of 19 runners, with the soft ground going against him.

The form of that race has been franked with winner St Mark's Basilica since winning the Coral Eclipse and Derab now drops into Listed company.

If being the Group horse that the yard feels he could be then he needs to be taking this event out and he looks to be the one to beat.

Trainer To Follow - John & Thady Gosden

John & Thady Gosden look to be sending a strong team to Newbury on Saturday and might be worth following in the bigger races.

In the Listed Steventon Stakes they have arguably their best chance of the day with Derab, who is thought to be a Group horse in a Listed race and could be a class above this field.

Other nice types for the yard on Saturday look to be Flaunt and Princess Nadia in the Fillies' Novice Stakes, with both of them harbouring superb pedigrees.

The Gosden's have been in fine form over the last 12 months with their horses at Newbury running at 20% strike rate having had eight winners and 11 places from 40 runners.

Jockey To Follow - Andrea Atzeni

Italian maestro Andrea Atzeni is booked to have some smart rides at Newbury at the weekend, riding mostly for his retained trainer Roger Varian.

His first big ride of the day comes in the Listed Steventon Stakes with Movin Time, who drops in class from his last run, but he does need to bounce back to form.

Other nice chances for the experienced rider is Zeeband in the marathon handicap and Royal Harmony in the Fillies' Novice Stakes.

Atzeni has a fair record at Newbury over the last year, running at a 15% strike rate having won four of his 28 events, including landing another seven places.
