Age: 9
Weight: 9-5

Heather Main’s runner in the listed race at Newmarket this week is the nine-year-old Island Brave. Oisin Murphy will take the ride on the runner, who has won five from 33 career starts on the turf.

This will be his return to the track, as he was last seen at the start of December finishing fifth of 13 over two miles on the all-weather at Kempton. His latest start on the turf came in this race 12 months ago, but he finished last of five, and eleven lengths behind Nate The Great.

Island Brave is without a win in eight efforts in stakes company, and this appears a challenging task to see that trend come to an end.

T: Roger Varian
N/A
Age: 6
Weight: 9-5
OR: 105
Days: 19

Shandoz is a runner for Roger Varian in the Rose Bowl Stakes this week. David Egan will take the ride on the six-year-old, who is one of the lightly raced contenders in this field.

He will be making just his eleven start under rules, and he has landed four victories. However, he was outclassed in high-quality company on his previous start, finishing over seven lengths behind Bay Bridge when fifth on the all-weather at Kempton.

His only start on the turf since the start of 2022 came in August, as he was third of seven in the G3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury. He could be an interesting contender up in trip, while his latest effort on the all-weather at least sees him come into this challenge with a recent run under his belt.

Enemy will the ride of Richard Kingscote in the Rose Bowl Stakes at Newmarket on Thursday. The Ian Williams-trained six-year-old steps back up to two miles for the first time since finishing last of eleven in the G1 Goodwood Cup.

His most encouraging effort this term came over a mile and six, as he was third of 14 in the Old Borough Handicap at Haydock.

He was most recent seen over a mile and four when ninth of 12 in the Racing League at Southwell. However, he is without a win on British turf since landing victory by over three lengths from Dark Jedi at Musselburgh in the Queen’s Cup.

Frankie Dettori

Trawlerman

J: Frankie Dettori
T: John & Thady Gosden
N/A
Age: 5
Weight: 9-5
OR: 113
Days: 13

Frankie Dettori will take the ride on Trawlerman for John & Thady Gosden this week. The five-year-old appears to have the race at his mercy, as he holds a considerable advantage in terms of ratings.

The runner will likely go off at a short price after winning on his return to action at Salisbury earlier this month over a mile and six. He stormed clear of the field on that day to finish 13 lengths clear of Sleeping Lion.

He enjoyed a fine run of form on British soil last season, winning the Summer Handicap and Ebor Handicap, before finishing a very solid third behind Trueshan in the G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup. Trawlerman is very clearly the runner to beat at Newmarket.
