John Of Gaunt Stakes Guide

1. Snazzy Jazzy

T - Clive Cox

J - Hector Crouch

Off since October and returning from lengthy absence, he heads the field after adding a fifth career victory to his ranks in a Listed race in France latest.

Looks progressive, and recovered from Naas disappointment where he did not really get the rub of the green.

Must up his game in this however.

2. Breton Rock

T - David Simcock

J - Jamie Spencer

Breton Rock has a quality conversion race given his age and class experience, and will always be remembered for his 50/1 shock win of the Lennon Stakes at Goodwood in 2017.

Returned to finished third of four at Windsor in Listed company three weeks ago which did not offer much, and did not finish the last campaign that well either.

Admirable qualities, and cannot be completely discounted from a much needed return to form.

3. Burnt Sugar

T - Roger Fell

J - Ben Curtis

Draw in stall one this time, Roger Fell's Burnt Sugar won two top-notch handicaps last July, but does has something to find even now back in this level.

After victories in the Bunbury Cup at Newmarket, and the Gigaset International Stakes at Ascot, he was never involved at Glorious Goodwood, Leopardstown or Longchamp in a Group One.

Each way contender to pull out another big race out of the fire.

4. Keyser Soze

T - Richard Spencer

J - Graham Lee

Keyser Soze has been progressive on the all-weather this winter, but does need to produce a career best to be involved in this finish.

Three victories in a row date back to December on the all-weather at Lingfield - where he has won twice along with a success at Newcastle.

He was below par on finals day at the Surrey venue on latest appearance, so needs to bounce back big time on the turf.

5. Larchmont Lad

T - Joseph Tuite

J - David Egan

Not far away on his best form but well beaten over course and distance on good-to-soft ground last time out.

Prior to that he ran into a good second at Leicester in Listed company off a 1lb higher, and a repeat of that effort should see him go close.

Won a nice Group Two at the Curragh last season, and just seems a bit hit and miss and not that reliable.

6. Mankib

T - William Haggas

J - Jim Crowley

A course and distance runner-up on his reappearance, and as such, does not carry any sort of penalty for that effort.

He should be able to handle the track conditions as he attempts to reverse some form from that run but should be much fitter and holds a strong chance in the field.

Jim Crowley rides for regular owner Hamdan Al Maktoum, who has enjoyed plenty of winners recently.

7. Mitchum Swagger

T - Ralph Beckett

J - Harry Bentley

Stunning listed winner from the past at Newmarket, and might not be far away now favoured back on this slow going, but others have more convincing profiles overall.

Two starts this season over a mile, and has only beaten two home out of a possible twelve, but a slipping mark will see him back with a chance at some stage.

That could be here.

8. Safe Voyage

T - John Quinn

J - Jason Hart

In solid form of late, winning four of his last five, including course and distance success here last month, making it three-from-three at the track.

Reigned supreme at the Galway festival before his one overall disappointment at Ascot in the Balmoral Handicap, but never seemed to be going a yard that day.

The incoming ground conditions will shortly sharpen his appetite for another victory, and that is certainly possible here.

9. Sir Dancealot

T - David Elsworth

J - Gerald Mosse

Just five-years-old but seems to have been round for all eternity, and has three seven-furlong Group-race wins to his name (all last year).

Carries leading form angles going into this contests and has seems to operate best on soft or heavy ground.

Can build on his useful enough seventh in the Lockinge last time out as he takes a needed drop in class.

10. Suedois

T - David O'Meara

J - Daniel Tudhope

Behind Safe Voyage and Mankib over his course and distance last time out, but is another with decent form to his name.

His fourth placed finish at Sandown in a Group Two was a decent return run as well, so now time to put his best foot forward.

Finished a short-head behind Sir Dancealot at Goodwood in the Lennox Stakes last term, and these two could fight it out again.

11. Tip Two Win

T - Roger Teal

J - David Probert

Finished a brilliant second in last season's 2,000 Guineas to Saxon Warrior, but then faded away towards the latter stages of the season.

Fourth in the St James's Palace was another strong attempt even though more was expected from connections, but then struggled at Goodwood and Doha in the Qatar Derby over Christmas.

Needs to bounce back to his known best and capable of doing so. May need this run.

12. Shepherd Market

T - Clive Cox

J - Paul Hanagan

Winner of French Listed contest for fillies last September, but could be a shade outclassed here.

Two starts this term, only beating three home behind Agrotera in Listed company at Lingfield, and then halfway down the field at Lingfield behind Pretty Baby.

Time to jump up to the mark.
