Coronation Cup Guide

1. Communique

T - Mark Johnston

J - Franny Norton

Busy sort, who benefitted from a top ride when making all in a Group Two at Newmarket latest.

Was raced many times last season and picked up a few nice victories, including at Glorious Goodwood in a top handicap.

Does have good record at Class One level, but usually determines on the opposition. Some top class individuals here.

2. Cypress Creek

T - Aidan O'Brien

J - Donnacha O'Brien

Used as a pace-pusher for stablemate Kew Gardens on this month's well beat Chester return, and a similar job may be on his hands here.

Last of six behind Stradivarius on last start of last season in the Long Distance Cup on British Champions Day, but did win a nice Group Three at Naas the time before to set himself up.

That looks his level, and out of his depth over this lower trip in this.

3. Defoe

T - Roger Varian

J - Andrea Atzeni

Defoe has always acquitted himself well for Roger Varian but has struggled as a five-year-old so far, and in all of five previous Group One attempts.

Another one who could just be at the wrong level, he ran well behind Communique on latest start at Newmarket in a Group Two, but was poor on return behind Marmelo at Newbury.

Certainly improved from that effort you must give him that, but must raise the bar again to compete against the best.

4. Kew Gardens

T - Aidan O'Brien

J - Ryan Moore

Last year's St Leger winner - a standout three-year-old, should definitely be better and improve from his seasonal debut in the mud at Chester.

Solid claims from his win at Doncaster, his third in the Sky Bet Voltigeur at York, and victories at Royal Ascot in the Queen's Vase, and at Longchamp in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris.

Top stayer, and should take all the beating.

5. Marmelo

T - Hughie Morrison

J - Gerald Mosse

Hughie Morrison will be looking forward to running Telecaster in the Derby on Saturday, but has his old servant Marmelo ready to fire once again.

At 20/1 (at the time of writing), he represents great value following on from his win at Newbury on reappearance at Group Three level, well on top of market rival Defoe.

He finished second to Cross Counter in the Melbourne Cup at Flemington, who has since boosted the form in Dubai.

Surely a figure here, and must enter calculations.

6. Morando

T - Andrew Balding

J - Silvestre De Sousa

Beat Kew Gardens by eight widening lengths at Chester on soft ground, and would be a shock if he could repeat the feat on this going.

Still, has every opportunity to do so given his record lately, building on his good second to Dolphin Vista in Listed company to end last season with a win at Newbury in a Group Three.

Now in a Group One with the stable/partnership flying, interesting to see how he does.

7. Old Persian

T - Charlie Appleby

J - James Doyle

Two out of two for a four-year-old, building on last season's promise when he took the Group One Sheema Classic in Dubai over the winter.

Was supplemented for this which is a clear bit of intent from Godolphin and with the horse flying, it should not really be a surprise.

Big form chance and a definite player here.

8. Salouen

T - Sylvester Kirk

J - Oisin Murphy

Incredible run to finish second last year, just denied by Frankie Dettori and Cracksman close to the finish.

Has ran with great consistency since, getting a deserved victory over old foe Barsanti at Ascot in Listed company last time out.

0-9 in Group One's is the worry however, and may be vulnerable to those around him.

Top jock retains the ride.

10. Lah Ti Dar

T - John Gosden

J - Frankie Dettori

Only filly or mare in the field are stablemate Coronet's exclusion, and has the physical scope to progress even further than last year.

Winning her first two last season, she went onto finish a good second over a longer trip in the St Leger behind Kew Gardens, before a smart third in the Fillies & Mares contest on Champions Day at Ascot.

Just prevailed gamely and grimly at York last time out, and should come on for the run.

Top-class performer for Lord Lloyd Webber nonetheless.
