Throwback Thursday Race Of The Day - 22/07/21

Poet's Word

Today we are looking back at the 2018 renewal of the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, with Sir Michael Stoute taking the event for the sixth time in his career.

Poet's Word on the penultimate start of his career went on to take the Group One in one of the great renewals of the last 10 years, where he did battle with his stablemate Crystal Ocean.

Under James Doyle, the horse went from last to join Crystal Ocean at the front and two battled it out for two furlongs, with Poet's Word just managing to get his head in front when it mattered.

Poet's Word had an illustrious career Landing this event along with the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at the Royal meeting and Brigadier Gerard Stakes.

He is a horse that flew under the radar for most of his career, but after landing back to back Group One events and then finishing second to Roaring Lion in the Juddmonte International, he will go down as a very, very special horse.

Enjoy!
