Red Rum

Today we are taking it way back to 1973 where the superstar Grand National horse Red Rum landed his first ever win in the race and what a performance it was.

Winning the race three times in his career in 1973, 1974 and then regaining it 1977 he is one of the most famous horses to come out of the race and arguably the sport.

The run that kicked off his amazing record in the race came in this contest where he looked set for second the whole way round behind the talented Crisp.

With the leader basically being at the front for the majority of the race, Red Rum went in pursuit and event jumping the last, Crisp was numerous lengths ahead.

Getting tired up the run in, Red Rum rallied like he always does and off his weight of 10st 5lb, he managed to power home and just get up in the wings of the post.

It was a sensational renewal of the race and today we are taking a look back at it.
