Prix du Jockey Club Group One Guide

1. Zarkallani

Trainer - A Se Royer-Dupre

Jockey - Christophe Soumillon

The first of the 15 horses we are going to run through comes in the Aga Khan colours and Zarkallani looks a very progressive three year old colt who has not done a lot wrong in his three runs to date.

He finished second in his first two maidens showing obvious ability and got off the mark last week at Longchamp. He will have to step up a huge amount to be involved in this company but still retains potential and could be one for the future.

2. Motamarris

Trainer - F Head

Jockey - Aurelien Lemaitre

The unbeaten Motamarris owned by Hamdan Al Maktoum has been superb in all of this runs to date winning them all in good style and like many of the field could turn out to be a future superstar.

This again is a huge step up in class being his first Group 1 contest but the way he is progressing he warrants respect and his trainer will not want to lose his unbeaten record easily.

3. Mohawk

Trainer - Aidan O'Brien

Jockey - Donnacha O'Brien

The first of the Aidan O'Brien team, after fielding seven in the English Derby he has fielded three in the French and the first recruit is Mohawk with his son taking up the reigns.

Mohawk is a smart performer that started his season off at Chester in the Listed Dee Stakes finishing second behind Circus Maximus who looks a decent outfit.

He finished midfield in the Irish 2,000 Guineas with a mile being far to sharp for the three year old and although this trip will be more realistic he will have to have everything drop his way from stall 15.

4. Rockemperor

Trainer - Simone Brogi

Jockey - Iortiz Mendizabal

Another consistent performer in a race full of class athletes and Rockemperor has never been out of the placings on all of her starts to date with him getting off the mark for the first start two starts ago.

He finished a narrow second last time out at Longchamp in the Group 3 Prix la Force and it looks as if the step up in trip will help him in abundance but he has plenty of improving to do, to be involved on Sunday.

5. Roman Candle

Trainer - Andre Fabre

Jockey - Mikael Barzalona

The first of Andre Fabre's runners and the second string Godolphin runner in the field with Persian King looking the one to beat but definite Each way shouts could be in the offing for Roman Candle.

He landed a decent Group 2 at Saint-cloud last time out which is great form entering this contest, going over the same trip and has not lost in his career going over 1 mile 2 furlong.

Interesting runner.

6. Persian King

Trainer - Andre Fabre

Jockey - Pierre-Charles Boudot

Moving on to the superstar on show and Persian King is a previous Group 1 winner who is unbeaten in his last five races and truly is one of the best three year olds over 1 mile/ 1 mile 2 furlongs.

He has won Group races in England whilst spending the majority of his career in France. He is very versatile with his ground winning the French 2000 Guineas on heavy last time out but winning at Longchamp on good ground the time before that.

He truly is the one to beat in this race but as the big races have gone this season it has not been favourable to favourites, can he change that?

We think so.

7. Joe Francis

Trainer - J-C Rouget

Jockey - Jean-Bernard Eyquem

The first from the Rouget stable and he looks the weaker of the two having not run to a good standard in his two runs this season and it would take a miracle for him to be in the mix.

Last season he was unbeaten as a two year old showing he is very versatile on different grounds and if getting back to the form, which he must do, then you can be optimistic of a place but apart form that he could struggle.

8. Blenheim Palace

Trainer - Aidan O'Brien

Jockey - Seamie Heffernan

The second of the Ballydoyle contingent and Blenheim Palace looks to be the pace setter for the to other O'Brien runners and would have to massively more to be involved.

He did finish a nice second last time out to Broome in the Group 3 Derrenstown and if he performs well in the English Derby on Saturday he may be well backed in the betting for the this race.

9. Cape Of Good Hope

Trainer - Aidan O'Brien

Jockey - Ryan Moore

The final runner from Ireland is O'Brien's best chance of landing the Group 1 spoils with Cape Of Good Hope being the first pick of top jockey Ryan Moore and having the best form out of the Irish runners.

He started the season nicely with a Listed win at Epsom and was thought to heading back there for the English Derby but connections have chose to head to France and if coming on for his seasonal return he is not without a chance.

10. Raise You

Trainer - Andrew Balding

Jockey - David Probert

One of the few English raiders and Raise You is one of the most progressive horses in the field, winning both his runs to date in great style.

The first came at Newbury in a Class 4 where he dominated the field and then he stepped to a Listed contest at Newmarket, where again he dominated.

He will need to improve again but it looks as if his career is only just starting and he would be a selection to definitely look at in the place markets.

11. Kick On

Trainer - John Gosden

Jockey - Oisin Murphy

John Gosden's only runner in the race and another smart competitor to add to the field. Kick on started the season off nicely with a decent win in the Listed Feilden Stakes at Newmarket over nine furlongs.

He then dropped in trip for the 2000 Guineas and did not work out and by the looks of it this 1 mile 2f will suit perfectly and the little bit of cut in the ground is also a plus.

12. Slalom

Trainer - Andre Fabre

Jockey - Maxime Guyon

The last of Andre Fabre's runners is Slalom who poses a classy record of three wins from three in his career and very much adds to his trainers strong hand of runners.

He was very impressive on his return to racing this season winning nicely at Longchamp in a Group 3 over the same trip as Sunday and is a horse to put on the shortlist.

13. Starmaniac

Trainer - C Laffon-Parais

Jockey - Olivier Peslier

Starmaniac is certainly a horse to keep an eye on in the French Derby on Sunday as most of the time he runs better than his form suggests.

He made a nice seasonal reappearance in a conditions race and then finished a good third in a Group 2 behind Roman Castle and he is bound to come on for that run.

14. Sottsass

Trainer - J-C Rouget

Jockey - Cristian Demuro

The penultimate runner of the day is the last of the Rouget camp and he is a difficult one to work out winning a Listed event very easily last time but it is hard to see him going close in this field.

The stable have done well in this race in the past and they he has to be respected but there are better form lines on offer and an each way shout looks his best option to aim at.

15. Surfman

Trainer - Roger Varian

Jockey - Andrea Atzeni

The final runner of the Prix du Jockey Club 2019 is the English raider Surfman who goes for the trainer in red hot form Roger Varian.

Surfman won easily in a Class 5 at Newcastle on the all weather and from there improved massively to finish a good third in he Group 2 Dante at York.

He is an interesting runner for the yard and can't be overlooked at all if progressing again in stiff company.
