Age: 12
Weight: 11-12

This race is dominated by runners from Gordon Elliott's yard, and the first of those is the veteran Sire Du Berlais. The 12-year-old is a course winner here, having claimed success in the G2 Lismullen Hurdle back in 2020 in the hands of Mark Walsh, who is booked to ride here.

The gelding enters this contest in good form, having won the G1 Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham last March before winning the G1 Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree a month later. He capped off last season by finishing third in the G1 Champion Stayers' Hurdle at Punchestown in April, behind Asterion Forlonge and winner Klassical Dream.

He still possesses plenty of ability, but this might be his preparation run for the festival next month (much like a few here).

The back-to-back Cross Country Chase winner at the Cheltenham Festival Delta Work has been sent to the Boyne Hurdle for the second year running by trainer Gordon Elliott. The 11-year-old finished sixth here last term in a race that was won by fellow runner Blazing Khal before recording his second Cross Country victory at Cheltenham.

He then went on to unseat his rider in the Grand National at Aintree and hasn't been in the mix as of yet this term on two starts at Punchestown and Cheltenham, finishing third and sixth before heading here for his likely prep run before another crack at the Cross Country.

He cannot be ruled out but he has a bit to find over hurdles against this field.

Galvin

The third of Gordon Elliott's runners in this year's renewal of the Boyne Hurdle is Galvin. The ten-year-old has been a smart chaser for Elliott throughout his career and now returns over hurdles at Navan at what seems like his Cheltenham Festival prep run, as well as a few in this race.

He had a decent record over hurdles back in 2018/19, with his form reading 11162 before being sent chasing by his Irish trainer. Since then, he has won seven races over fences, including success in the G2 NH Challenge Cup Novices' Chase at Cheltenham in March 2021.

He comes here having not quite being at the same level, with his best run since winning at Punchestown in 2022 yielding a runner-up finish to fellow runner Delta Work in the Cross Country last March. Not ruled out but difficult to call his chances.

The final Gordon Elliott runner in the G2 Boyne Hurdle is Beacon Edge. The ten-year-old has been over both hurdles and fences in his career, probably faring better over the smaller obstacles for the Irishman.

His last win came not so long ago in a minor Thurles hurdle contest in October last year, beating Willie Mullins' Cash Back by just over a length to record a first victory for some time. It has not been plain sailing since, pulling up in a listed race here in December before finishing fourth in the G1 Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown after Christmas behind some good staying hurdlers.

He can do better here, but others make more appeal. However, Jack Kennedy rides here, which is a positive.

Jessica Harrington has one runner in the G2 Boyne Hurdle in the form of Ashdale Bob. The nine-year-old is a previous course winner here, having claimed success in a G2 Novice Hurdle here back in December 2020.

He spent a bit of time chasing after but never really achieved anything over the larger obstacles but has failed to record another win since that switch back to hurdles in 2022. He comes here on the back of finishing third of four in the Grade Two Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park won by Monkfish, which is his best effort for a while.

He's worth another look here against some horses who are prepping for Cheltenham next month, which he could take advantage of.

Charles Byrnes has one in this year's Boyne Hurdle, in the form of the current market favourite Blazing Khal. The eight-year-old won this contest last term by three lengths to Meet And Greet, before finishing a below-par sixth in the G1 Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.

Prior to his win here last term, he had to overcome a two-year absence from the track to resume his unbeaten record over hurdles but lost that at the Cheltenham Festival last time out.

The gelding has overcome time off the track before and has been off 11 months now but it wouldn't be a surprise to see him resume progress here and is a big player on seasonal reappearance.

Padraig Butler sends one runner to the Boyne Hurdle at Navan on Sunday with seven-year-old Da Capo Glory. The gelding has won twice in four runs this term, winning b y a neck at Punchestown in June as well as winning by a head last time out at Cork last month.

In between those wins, he had efforts in deeper waters at Tipperary, where he finished fifth in the G3 Grimes Hurdle and Galway, where he was pulled up in a G3 handicap over two miles won by Zarak The Brave.

He's now back in deeper company here in a grade two and despite winning last time out, there should be a couple here that are too good for him.

Hiddenvalley Lake

The last horse in the race is Henry De Bromhead's Hiddenvalley Lake. The seven-year-old had four runs over hurdles throughout 2022 and 2023, winning his first two starts over the obstacles at Naas and Cork, which was a Grade Three novice over three miles in the hands of Rachael Blackmore.

He then finished ninth of 20 in the Grade One Albert Bartlett at Cheltenham Festival next time out when priced at 17/2, last of the runners to finish the race. After being sent chasing for the first time last time out here in a beginners chase, when he fell three out, he is now sent back hurdling in order to try and find that winning touch again.

Some of the others make more appeal, in truth.
