Newmarket Tuesday Preview - 16/04/2019

13:15 - Specialise 7/1

Racing returns to headquarters with the Craven meeting, kicking off with Division I of the bet365 European Breeders Fund Fillies Maiden Stakes, where Specialise can get us off to a flyer.

Specialise is an unraced 3yo filly from Roger Varian's yard, who has a nice pedigree - a daughter from the great Mastercraftsman, out of the mare My Special J's.

Purchased for 50,000guineas, she is her mother's second foal, and is a sibling to a few winners in the US particularly over this trip.

The distance should suit and can prove useful on her first start, with Andrea Atzeni in the saddle.

Market will be worth noting.

13:50 - Flavius Titus 8/1

With Division II of the bet365 European Breeders Fund Fillies Maiden Stakes a little later on, we move onto the Weatherbys TBA Handicap for the more experienced horses over six furlongs.

The emphasis now back on the quicker legs in a sprint; Flavius Titus proved at Ascot in a useful handicap over this distance that he can compete, despite racing mainly over seven furlongs in his career.

Varian and Atzeni team up again with this 4yo gelding - who has been off the track almost 200 days, but on his first run back on the turf last year, he produced a fine turn of foot to win at Doncaster in June.

Infamous Postponed colours.

14:25 - Azano 2/1

Azano looks the eyecatcher in the Listed bet365 European Free Handicap, having finished second to eventual Greenham Stakes winner Mohaather at Newbury back in October.

Just a length-and-a-half to bridge, Azano won easily on his second start for John Gosden at Yarmouth after a poor debut; of which he ran very green.

That second to the Hamdan Al Maktoum colt was in a decent Group Three in Berkshire, of which he was five lengths clear of the third.

Big contender surely.

15:00 - Kadar 9/2

Many people may wake up this morning and question why Kadar is the third favourite for the Listed bet365 sponsored Feilden Stakes, a contest over nine furlongs on the Rowley Mile.

This €700,000 son of Scat Daddy breezed past a previous winner in Waldstern of John Gosden's on debut at Haydock back in September, and looked really exciting going forward for trainer Karl Burke.

Western Australia has a bit to find on his return run, and Kick On was not shown to good effect in a Group One last time, so perhaps this colt can show them up on his first start as a three-year-old.

Ground is an unknown, having only previously raced on good-to-soft.

Decent looking race nonetheless.

15:35 - Main Edition 9/2

Main Edition looks the form horse to take out of these, and she heads the market for the Lanwade Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes, a Group Three trial for the 1,000 Guineas over seven furlongs.

Was not seen at her best in her last two starts over the season, but has excellent form claims over six and seven furlongs for trainer Mark Johnston.

A winner at Royal Ascot on just her third racecourse appearance, when beating old foe La Pelosa in the Albany - who has since won at a Grade One in Canada, and Fairyland who won the Juddmonte Cheveley Park at this venue in September.

Has excuses on his first start here last summer, but followed up with another victory over the Appleby filly in a Group Three in August.

16:10 - Chasing Dreams 8/15

Many may regard the bet365 British EBF Maiden Fillies Stakes as a no-bet, but we are still putting all our eggs in one basket with Chasing Dreams, who could prove very smart indeed.

750,000guineas as a yearling, this two-year-old filly will be hooded for her debut, and is another with notable looking pedigree.

It is the only place to look when a horse in unraced, and is a daughter of the Aussie Starspangledbanner, from A Huge Dream. Maybe not familiar with most of us, but is a half-sister to Hong Kong Group One winner Xtension, and to dam of British Group One winner Harry Angel - former Clive Cox sprinter.

Sports the same colours as the latter, and yard will be looking to follow their success in this from twelve months ago.

16:45 - Lavender’s Blue 7/1

Lavender's Blue will begin her quest to fulfilling her Epsom Oaks entry, in Division II of the bet365 European Breeders Fund Fillies Maiden Stakes.

This three-year-old filly was unraced as a two-year-old, with Amanda Perrett ready to kick off her campaign on the Rowley Mile.

She is a half-sister to 1m4f winner Sing A Rainbow, out of the master Sea The Stars, and surely one to place in the notebook with a strong run here.

17:20 - War Tiger 11/2

War Tiger will bid for a hat-trick of wins in the plainly-named bet365 Handicap, a Class Three over ten furlongs.

His handicap debut win at Wolverhampton a couple of months ago makes for encouraging reading, having previously scored at the same track back in January in a Novice event.

Looks on the rise and jumps up the weights now to compete against some top horses of Sir Michael Stoute's and Charlie Appleby's, who could be special themselves.

Turf debut, knuckles down to his task well and could be hard to stop.

Tony Hamilton rides for Richard Fahey.
