Newmarket Saturday Preview - 29/06/19

14:05 - Summer Romance 7/4

The Newmarket card starts off with a hot Listed contest in the Empress Fillies Stakes over six furlongs and Summer Romance for trainer Charlie Appleby looks the one to beat.

This two year old filly was a real eye-catcher on debut at Yarmouth when showing a lot of class to win well on soft ground and if taking to this quicker turf should go well again.

He stands out from the rest of the field with his pedigree being a son Kingman who has been the sire of the year so far having numerous winners across the different race-tracks.

15:15 - Tabarrak 6/1

The feature race at Newmarket on Saturday is the Group 3 Criterion Stakes over seven furlongs and Tabarrak for trainer Richard Hannon looks to have a great chance.

This six year old finished last season off in great style winning two nice races and the latest being a Listed contest at Redcar which sets a decent standard.

He made his seasonal debut this season at Ascot in a tough Listed contest behind Zaaki who went on to win again and Barney Roy who franked the form as well.

He will need to improve from that run but the form line looks strong.

16:25 - Manorah

The Class 3 Fillies Handicap over 1 mile 4 furlongs looks set to be a tasty affair and although tricky, we have gone with Roger Varian's Manorah.

This exciting three year old filly looks a really smart recruit for the yard running to a high standard as a juvenile, getting off the mark at the second time of asking.

Her seasonal debut was nothing to shout about but last time out she won well at Nottingham beating the subsequent Sandringham Stakes winner at Royal Ascot which looks a good form line heading into this one.

17:00 - Starfighter

The Class 4 Handicap over 1 mile 2 furlongs comes next and in this weak race we have gone for the Ed Walker trained Starfighter who if stepping up should be in the frame.

He finished a smart third last time out at Leicester and going off the same mark today, over the same distance makes him a big player if improving.

He has been a consistent gelding for the yard only finishing outside the top three in one of his last five races, but now he needs to convert that form into wins.

17:35 - Ummalnar

The final race of the day sees the British EBF Fillies Handicap over one mile and the William Haggas trained Ummalnar looks a talented filly.

This four year old is very lightly raced compared to the rest of the field only being on track four times but she won her first two starts at the age of three including once over course and distance.

She has to be respected if coming back to that form but she will need to be better than her seasonal debut when finishing sixth at Ripon and hopefully that was just to get her race fit.
