Newcastle Saturday Preview - 29/06/19

13:50 - Deep Intrigue 12/1

Saturday's racing at Newcastle gets underway with the Betfair Exchange Handicap over six furlongs and in this sprint contest we fancy Mark Johnston's Deep Intrigue.

This three year old has a very good record on the all weather winning three out of his six races and on his only previous start over course and distance he won nicely.

He has to raise his game from his last three wins this season but with Silvestre De Sousa on board and his trainer in good form you can not rule him out.

14:25 - Invincible Army 15/8

The second race of the day sees a seven strong field go into the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes over six furlongs and we have sided with Invincible Army for trainer James Tate.

He started his season off in March at Doncaster winning the Listed Cammidge Trophy Stakes, comfortably beating some smart horses and looking like a different horse ahead of his new campaign.

He backed up these suspicions when landing the Group Two Duke Of York Clipper Logistics Stakes at York, again seeing off some fair competition and priming him for a big run in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

He went off at 7/1 in the market which looked a good price to take for the way he had ran all season but could only finish seventh behind the superstar Blue Point and has a big chance in this contest to get back to winning ways.

15:00 - Carwennan 5/1

The Class 2 Northumberland Vase Handicap which acts as a consolation race for horses that could not get into the Northumberland Plate, is up next and we have gone with Carnwennan to land the spoils.

This Charlie Fellowes trained four year old looks to be the pick of the bunch in the betting market having good Polytrack form and if being able to convert that to Tapeta will be a serious contender.

This season the gelding has finished second and won his last two races meaning he is seeking a hat-trick and is still nicely in the weights to run affectively.

15:35 - Stratum 9/1 & Time To Study 16/1

The feature race of the day at the Newcastle track is the Northumberland Plate over 2 miles and in this big fielded handicap we have two selections.

Our first is the Willie Mullins trained Stratum who is due a big run on the flat after hitting a bad patch of form and if finding the form from his JLT Cup win at Newbury he will be a serious player.

Our other selection is one of Ian Williams three runners in the field and Time To Study looks a real improver in the making, finishing a good third in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting and also sixth in this race last year off 12lb higher.

He will definitely stay the trip and looks a good each-way selection.

17:15 - Woven

In the penultimate race of the afternoon up north and last selection of the meeting from us comes in the Betfair Casino Class 2 Handicap over seven furlongs.

In this nine runner contest we fancy bottom weight Woven for trainer David Simcock who has only had one start so far this season but should be better for it.

The three year old finished a fourth in a small runner event at Chelmsford on his seasonal debut and if coming on for that should enter the frame.
