The first race of the afternoon on day two of Glorious Goodwood is the Class 2 Handicap over 1m4f and Secret State for Charlie Appleby could still have more in the tank.

Making his debut in April over a mile at Newmarket he was a good second behind the smart Francesco Clemente for John & Thady Gosden and then up in trip to 10.5f at Chester saw off the smart Honiton with ease to get off the mark.

Dropped back to a mile next time out he made it back to back wins in good fashion and was then bumped up to 1m4f at Royal Ascot and revelled in the extra distance.

Having been extremely well backed ahead of the King George V Stakes on handicap debut off a mark of 93, he gritted down and stayed on exceptionally well to land a hat-trick.

The second has since gone on to land a Group Three and only 7lb higher he should go close again.

The first big race of the afternoon sees the Group Three Oak Tree Stakes over seven furlongs and with 17 runners going to post we have two selections.

The first is the three year old filly Heredia for Richard Hannon that looks a very progressive type that can be excused for losing her unbeaten record last time out and could bounce back here.

Making her debut in August last year she landed a Maiden at Windsor over 6f in good style and then made it back to back wins stepping up to 7f at Newbury.

Landing the hat-trick at York over 7f again on handicap debut, she then went to Royal Ascot and went on to land the 28 runner Sandringham Stakes.

Stepped up to Listed company last time out she could only finish third behind Grand Dame and Oscula, not really running her race.

Back down to 7f for this event, we can forgive her for that run and hopefully she gets back on her upward curve.

At a much bigger price and to played each way is the Charlie Hills trained Allayaali who is yet to be seen this season and could be the surprise package of the race.

The daughter of Dark Angel was seen four times last term, making her debut in June when winning a Fillies' Maiden over 6.5f at Doncaster, but off the back of that ran no race behind Inspiral when stepped up to Listed company at Sandown.

Given a bit of time she returned in a Fillies' Nursery Handicap at Doncaster again and got back to winning ways in taking style.

Making her final start of last term in October at Newmarket she was a good second behind Fast Attack in Group Three company and potentially being the freshest horse in the race she could have a part to play.\

Interesting.

A classic race every year at this meeting is the Group Three Molecomb Stakes over five furlongs and we are taking one on against the field with Studio City.

Michael O'Callaghan looks to have a really nice type to go to war with, making his debut in May over 5f at Cork when a decent fourth.

Improving next time out to finish second behind a nice type for Donnacha O'Brien who held some good form, he then got off the mark last time out at Navan on the quickest ground he has tackled yet.

He bolted up by six lengths that day and with the trainer landing a huge gamble in this race two seasons ago this colt looks interesting holding a similar profile.

Modern Games

J: William Buick
T: Charlie Appleby
N/A
Age: 3
Weight: 9-2
OR: 114
Days: 17

The feature race of day two at the West Sussex based track is the Group One Sussex Stakes and with the superstar Baaeed a 1/6 shot we are looking to play a horse without the obvious favourite.

We have sided with the Charlie Appleby and Godolphin owned Modern Games to run a big race behind the fav having some strong form over the mile.

Needing his first experience on a racecourse at Haydock, he learnt plenty and got off the mark at the second time of asking at Newmarket over 7f.

Sent to Leicester he was a narrow second to Leicester with the ground having a bit of juice in the ground, but he returned to winning ways in a Nursery Handicap at Doncaster.

Rounding off his season in England he scored again at Newmarket in the Group Three Tattersalls Stakes, taking his first black type event.

Appleby sent him to the Breeders' Cup meeting at Del Mar off the back of that run for his first taste of Group One Company and under a superb ride by William Buick he went on to land the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

Making his seasonal debut this term the three year old made an emphatic start to the season landing the French 2000 Guineas with a bit in hand.

Since then he was upped in trip to 1m2f in the G1 Prix Du Jockey Club and finished a fair third behind the smart Vadeni who franked the form in the Coral Eclipse.

Back at 7f last time out in the Group One Prix Jean Prat he could only manage fifth but now back up to a mile, he has a big chance to bounce back to form and finished best of the rest behind Baaeed.

Frankie Dettori

Natasha

J: Frankie Dettori
T: John & Thady Gosden
N/A
Age: 3
Weight: 9-9
OR: 94
Days: 12

One of our best value bets of the day comes in the Class 2 Fillies Handicap with Natasha for John & Thady Gosden looking a big improver off the back of her seasonal debut.

A beautifully bred daughter of Frankel related to the talented Almanzor, she made her debut in August last term and was a decent second at Kempton over a mile.

Getting off the mark next time out in taking fashion over the same C&D, she then made her turf debut at Sandown and once again was an emphatic winner.

Stepped up to Group One company on her final start of last term she did not handle the heavy ground in the Prix Marcel Boussac and ran no race at all.

Back this term up in trip to 10f she rad a credible race but did look like she would come on massively for that and this might have been the plan for a while.

Big potential improver off her current handicap mark.

The Platinum Queen

J: Oisin Orr
T: Richard Fahey
N/A
Age: 2
Weight: 9-2
OR: 98
Days: 19

The penultimate selection of the afternoon is the Conditions Stakes over 5f and The Platinum Queen should take all the beating for Richard Fahey.

A smart daughter of Cotai Glory, the filly made her debut in June at Ripon when learning plenty on the job to get off the mark.

Sent to Royal Ascot next time out she was not disgraced in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes with the event throwing out plenty of winners.

The Platinum Queen was one of them next time out when bolting up back in a Novice Stakes at York, seeing off the talented Yahsat by close to four lengths.

The one to beat on her form this term.

The Attorney

J: William Buick
T: Charles Hills
N/A
Age: 4
Weight: 10-1
OR: 94
Days: 18

The final event of the afternoon on day two sees a big fielded handicap over seven furlongs and we have dutched the race with two each way contenders.

The first is the Charlie Hills trained The Attorney who holds a place dear to our hearts and hopefully can now get his head back in front.

A smart horse last term winning at Lingfield off a mark of 78 over 7f, he has been seen five more times since then in Class 3 and 2 Handicap events, finishing second in all but one of them.

Now up to a mark of 94 his last three runs at Goodwood, Newcastle and Newmarket, with his fifth in the Bunbury Cup being a huge run, have seen him back to his best and getting his ideal fast conditions again he can't be ruled out at a price.

The form of the Bunbury Cup has worked out very well with Bless Him and Jumby running blinders at the weekend to finish first and second in the International Stakes and off the same mark, The Attorney should go close.

Silvestre De Sousa

Stockpyle

J: Silvestre De Sousa
T: William Muir & Chris Grassick
N/A
Age: 3
Weight: 8-11
OR: 83
Days: 16

At a slightly bigger price is the William Muir & Chris Grassick trained Stockpyle who could be very well in with the handicapper off his mark of 83.

Taking some time to get going, his last two runs have been his best by far, getting off the mark at Chepstow in an Apprentice Handicap over 7f and then last time out at Wolves bolted up again under a penalty.

He looks to have plenty left in the tank and should give another good account of himself seeking a hat-trick.
