Glorious Goodwood Day One Preview - 29/07/19

13:50 - Unibet Handicap - Soto Sizzler 12/1 & Aquarium 20/1

Godolphin’s Setting Sail heads the betting in the opener on Day One and his form has stacked up nicely in recent weeks, but we have sided with two e/w pokes with up to 5 places on offer with numerous bookmakers.

Firstly, SOTO SIZZLER, who has never finished out of the top two at the track gets on well with Oisin Murphy (form figures 1,2) and gets in off a very attractive weight. He is seeking a turf hat-trick and looks overpriced.

At a massive 20/1, Mark Johnston’s AQUARIUM could also run a big race. He was given too much to do at York latest and has dropped below his last winning mark. The yard won the race four of the last ten years.

14:25 - Qatar Vintage Stakes - Pinautbo 7/4

This is a cracking renewal of the Vintage Stakes and although there are many exciting colts on offer it is hard to see past PINAUTBO, who was mightily impressive when landing the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Mystery Power was also brilliant in the Superlative Stakes but subsequently carries a penalty and Lope Y Fernandez, who holds a big reputation, has plenty to find with his recent conqueror.

15:00 - Lennox Stakes - Space Traveller 13/2

Richard Fahey’s son of Bated Breath is very much a 7f horse and that was confirmed when a 25/1 surprise winner of the Jersey Stakes. Although a Group 3, the form of that race would probably suffice here and he gets the healthy age allowance.

Danny Tudhope, who has been magnificent this season, again takes the ride.

15:35 - Goodwood Cup - South Pacific 33/1

Stradivarius seeks his third straight victory in the race and it is hard to look past him for win purposes, though at a monster 33/1 we feel South Pacific holds e/w claims.

He finished strongly in the King George V Stakes at Ascot to see off two stablemates and may progress further over this extended trip.

16:10 - Maiden Stakes - Lost In Time

Richard Hannon has a fantastic record in this race, winning three of the previous ten renewals, but it is Saeed Bin Suroor’s Dubawi colt LOST IN TIME that we are siding with.

He is a half-brother to the smart Memorial Day and was too green to do himself justice when second on debut. Much better can be expected here for a yard who are in fine form and also won the race themselves back in 2016.

17:15 - Unibet Fillies Handicap - Al Messila 14/1

The Hannon family had success with the sire of AL MESSILA and things seem to have also clicked for this colt winning his last two races in fine style. He was strong in the market on both occasions and looks to have bold claims of notching up a hat-trick for owners who sponsor this meeting.

His wide draw is a concern, but the winner of this race last year came from stall 15 and he does tend to come from off the pace.
