Three Performances From The Weekend - 05/07/21

St Mark's Basilica

The story of the weekend came from Sandown with superstar St Mark's Basilica truly stamping his authority on the middle distance division by landing another Group One event.

Winning the Coral Eclipse on Saturday in such emphatic fashion has now put him to the top of the rankings in that division, having also landed the French 2000 Guineas and French Derby already this term.

Having stepped up to 1m2f for the Derby, it was his first try at the new trip in England and taking on four time Group One winner Addeybb, Saudi Cup winner Mishriff and Dee Stakes winner El Drama, he blew the field away.

We are still yet to see where this three year olds ceiling is and it looks as though it could be the Juddmonte International next for the son of Siyouni.

Alpinista

Alpinista for Sir Mark Prescott stole the show at Haydock in the Group Two Lancashire Oaks, staying the 1m4f the best of the chasing pack to make it back to back wins.

The four year old daughter of Frankel had shown last season just how good she can be when chasing home the superstar Love in the Epsom Oaks and now she has trained on again this season with this win being the biggest of her career.

Having started the season off landing a Listed event at Goodwood over 1m4f, the step up to this Group Two was the natural progression and she stays so well.

Now she could step up again in trip back at Goodwood or stay at the 1m4f, which she is proven over on both quick and soft ground.

Exciting filly.

Broome

Finally, it was a great weekend for Aidan O'Brien as Broome bought up the second Group One for the Ballydoyle maestro at the weekend when taking out the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

Broome has always held big potential being smart at both three and four, but this season as a five year old has been his best to date.

He has been seen six times, landing a hat-trick of wins to start the season including the Group Two Mooresbridge stakes at the Curragh.

After that he was a narrow second in the Group One Tattersalls Gold Cup and again he had to play bridesmaid at Royal Ascot in the Hardwicke Stakes.

Turned around quickly, on Sunday he saw off a strong challenge from the French to take the Saint-Cloud event by a length and at either 1m2f or 1m4f he is a very special talent.
