Mohaafeth Could Swerve Derby If Ground Turns Up Soft

Mohaafeth

Connections of the third favourite for the Group One Cazoo Derby at Epsom next month Mohaafeth have warned ante-post punters that if the ground turns soft before the race he may be forced to miss out on the Classic event.

The son of Frankel has been seen three times this season and has landed a hat-trick of wins having got off the mark for his career at Lingfield in March in a Novice Stakes and he then backed that up in a handicap at Newmarket over 1m2f.

His best performance of the season came last time out when landing the Listed Newmarket Stakes over 1m2f, seeing off the smart Secret Protector by an easy five lengths, never really having to come off the bridle.

All looks all systems go for the Derby in June, But Haggas and connections have now sent out a warning that if the rain comes lashing down and the ground turns soft, he will not run.

(Credit Racing Post) Shadwell racing manager Angus Gold said: “We’ve found that fast ground is important to Mohaafeth and Andrew said he was not really suited by the slightly slower ground this morning. If it goes on raining, which it is forecast to do this week at least, it won’t suit him as it blunts his turn of foot."

He added: “We’ll keep an eye on the weather but if it comes up soft at Epsom he won’t be running in the Derby and if it’s on the slower side we’d have to have a good think about it. Obviously it’s still a long way off but the forecast doesn’t look that promising.”
