A veteran of handicap sprints, 8 year old Justanotherbottle who’s spent the majority of his career mixing it in the handicap ranks.

He’s tried his hand at listed level only once and he ran creditably to be a valiant 2nd but never looked of the quality to go after the winner.

His career has often seen him score a valuable prize over 5 or 6 furlongs and see the handicapper take a firm grip. Normally finding his success of a mark in the mid 90’s.

He’s shown he’s still at his best this season. Despite a very disappointing outing at Epsom where he reared in the stalls and saw his chance gone at the start, he handily won a handicap over 6 furlongs off a mark of 102 last time out.

A now career high mark of 107 puts handicaps out of the question so he has to try and show he has the quality to mix it at listed level over 5 furlongs.

Julie Camacho’s 7 year old gelding Makanah has spent the majority of his career in handicaps at lower levels but has occasionally dipped his toe into listed and group company with no success.

Trying listed company back in 2020 he found himself well outclassed but found success when dropping into a class 3 conditions race.

He hasn’t managed to win since. He has shaped well in handicaps since. Especially this season when running well and only being denied twice by narrow margins.

Dakota Gold just got the better of him over 6 furlongs here at York and next time out he was just denied by Ancient Times over 5 furlongs at Musselburgh.

Last time out the handicapper looked to have the better of him as a mark of 102 seemed to blunt him but he ran well to be 3rd. This is a big step up in grade but he looks to still be in fine form.

City Walk

Age: 5
Weight: 9-1
OR: 99

A lightly raced 5 year old for Saeed bin Suroor, it took City Walk a while to find his feet with racing. Unable to score in novice and maiden company, he found success in low level handicaps. Scoring with bundles in hand on rattling fast ground at Bath.

He failed to back that up in the rest of the season and he only ran three times last season, all in handicaps and all attempts seeing him well beaten. His best outing came over 6 furlongs on the artificial surface of Newcastle.

This season has seen him return in much better form. A close defeat over 6 furlongs on comeback, he then scored handily in a low level handicap on the all-weather again.

A poor showing at Ripon was quickly left behind when he brushed aside Dakota Gold last time out to win a decent handicap at Newcastle with bundles in hand.

This is a major step up and he doesn’t look to have masses of scope for improvement left in him.

Winter Power

T: Tim Easterby
Age: 4
Weight: 8-10
OR: 114
Days: 25

A wonderfully talented mare for Tim Easterby who always brings her top from here on the Knavesmire. Despite taking a few runs to really find her feet as a sprinter at 2, when the penny really dropped she looked like she was going to be a top class sort over the minimum trip.

Returning to racing as a 3 year old last year with a lethal display here at York with a dazzling listed win, she looked outclassed in the Kings Stand.

However, a return to York next time out in this race last year saw her at her best again as she powered clear of the field with relative ease. Her crowning moment came again here at York when demolishing the Nunthorpe Stakes.

Her form tailed off for the rest of the season and she failed to really make her presence felt in group 1 races in Ireland and France.

She’s not looked the same animal this season. Struggling in a group 2 at Haydock on reappearance and again failing to lie up in the Kings Stand.

A return to her beloved York hopefully brings out the best in her again en route to another try at the Nunthorpe.

Cam Hardie

T: Antony Brittain
Age: 5
Weight: 9-1
OR: 104
Days: 14

This 5 year old has been on the go since November of 2020. Gelded before he started racing, Mondammej moved to the care of Roger Varian and has proved himself to be a very hardy and battle hardened sort.

He’s not had a break from racing since his winning debut, connections quickly making up for any lost time. He’s slowly progressed through the handicap ranks and has shown himself to some smart effect scoring six handicaps, all over the minimum trip.

Handling raises from the assessor he’s managed to score off of marks of 96 and 97 but has since found himself racing off marks in the low 100’s.

He’s still performed creditably and went agonisingly close at listed level at Lingfield back in February. He’s seen his sights aimed higher recently contesting group 3 and group 2 races but has found himself outclassed.

A drop back in grade should suit and he was only denied a neck last time at this level. Not without hope to hit the frame.

Age: 5
Weight: 8-10
OR: 94
Days: 10

A well tried 5 year old mare, Chocquinto is trained over in Ireland and has found some success in handicaps over on the other side of the Irish Sea.

Seen in low level handicaps, she was rated only 65 when winning her first race of last season. She’s slowly improved and came back this season showing much better form.

Winning a handicap off a mark of 70 earlier in the season, she then tried her hand in listed competition and ran exceptionally well to be a close 3rd behind the impressive Geocentric.

She didn’t show the same form last time out in a conditions race and looks to have a mountain to climb here to get competitive.

Atalis Bay

J: Daniel Tudhope
T: Robert Cowell
Age: 4
Weight: 9-1
OR: 100
Days: 42

A promising opening campaign in 2020 saw Atalis Bay score a maiden and a brace of handicaps smartly before finding group 3 level well out of reach and being left for dead by Winter Power.

He recaptured some form last season when coming 2nd to Winter Power here at York before scoring a listed race of his own at Sandown smartly. His form has tailed off since however and he failed to lie up in group or handicap company off the back of that.

A switch in stables for this season hasn’t drawn out any improvement and he’s come home 9th in a group 3 and a listed race. He’s since been gelded and that needs to bring about plenty of improvement to have any chance here.

Another 3 year old taking his chance here against older horses, Caturra showed a highly precocious nature like his sire Mehmas and had a highly successful juvenile season.

Scoring in novice company on his second outing he was sent for the Coventry Stakes at Ascot off the back of that and ran well enough to be a respectable 7th.

A drop in class saw him narrowly score a listed success over 6 furlongs next time out before trying group company again and failing to beat a rival home.

Dropping in trip and grade to contest a listed race here at York he was only narrowly denied by Attagirl when giving weight away to that rival. His big success came when scoring a group 2 at Doncaster and just getting up to deny Armor.

This season he hasn’t returned in the same kind of form however. Coming 2nd in a group 3 over in France on comeback before failing to land a blow over 6 furlongs at Haydock.

Last seen being led for dead by Mitbaahy in the Scurry Stakes when short of room, connections will be hoping for a clear passage here to show his talent.

A busy juvenile season saw Korker run eight times. A narrow defeat on debut saw him score at short odds next time out, despite looking very workmanlike.

A move up in grade for the Norfolk Stakes left him exposed for quality but he did manage to shoulder a penalty next time out to win very smartly over the minimum trip again.

A change in trip failed to bring about any improvement but dropping to handicap company saw him score a win and go close on his last outing of the season.

Gelded ready for this season, the operation didn’t bring about immediate success and he was beaten in handicap company on seasonal return.

But, with that run in the books he did score smartly over course and distance to win a low level handicap. Last seen in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse StakesAt Royal Ascot, he totally missed the break but ran on well to be 11th.

He’ll have to bring his best here and be much quicker out the gates to stand a chance.

Andrea Atzeni

Royal Aclaim

J: Andrea Atzeni
T: James Tate
Age: 3
Weight: 8-5
OR: 92
Days: 28

This 3 year old has only been seen twice on course but has made quite the impression in her outings so far.

Making her debut on the all-weather at Newcastle over 5 furlongs, she ran on well late to get up and hit the line powerfully.

With that experience in the books she came back out in a novice race at Bath last time out and easily shouldered her penalty to stride to a convincing success.

Travelling powerfully throughout the race and only having to be shaken up for her to assert her dominance quickly.

She moves up starkly in grade here but is going the right way and still has plenty of improvement to come.
