Archie Watson boasts one in the Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket with eight-year-old Outbox, who hasn’t won since winning listed event here in June 2021. The gelding ran some decent races last season, including third in this race, behind Yibir and Living Legend when priced at 12/1.

He also managed a third-place finish in a group three at Newbury but on reappearance this season, finished last of 14 last month at Musselburgh in class two handicap and has to find much more to figure in this company.

Would be an unlikely winner, with his last win coming two years ago. Hollie Doyle is on board.

Global Storm

Charlie Appleby sends two to the Jockey Club Stakes in the form of Hurricane Lane and Global Storm. Global Storm arrives at Newmarket on an indifferent run of form, winning Group Two Dubai City Of Gold at Meydan in March but 13th of 15 in the Group Two Dubai Gold Cup later that month at the same course.

The six-year-old last claimed victory in the UK here back in 2021 but had a couple of decent efforts in grouped company last year here and at Goodwood. The gelding could bounce back from that Meydan defeat and he’s expected to go better here. One to consider.

Rae Guest sends 95-rated Jewel In My Crown to Newmarket for the Jockey Club Stakes, entering grouped company for the first time in the process. The five-year-old mare won three races last season, at Windsor, Kempton and Epsom Downs but struggled when thrust into listed company, finishing sixth of eight at Windsor and tenth at Lingfield.

This is a tough assignment for her, in this company for the first time and despite some decent runs last term, she would be a shock winner.

Hurricane Lane

Charlie Appleby boasts two in this Newmarket contest over 1m 4f, with Global Storm and Hurricane Lane. The latter arrives here as the current second market favourite, but the five-year-old is enduring a difficult run of form following a stellar 2021 (six wins from eight runs).

He has disappointed on his last two starts, finishing eighth at Saint-Cloud in a group one before last of seven on reappearance last month in the Group Three Surprise Stakes at Newbury. Is much better than that but hasn’t won since 2021 and his form since suggests that will continue. William Buick does the steering.

West Wind Blows

Age: 4
Weight: 9-5

Days: 216

Simon & Ed Crisford send four-year-old West Wind Blows to the Jockey Club Stakes following a good debut last term, winning at Newcastle and Nottingham before ninth in the Epsom Derby, which may have come too soon. He bounced back to win Listed Hamilton contest before sixth in a group three at Goodwood.

The four-year-old then triumphed in a group three at ParisLongchamp before third at the same course in Group Two Qatar Prix Dollar over 1m 1f, behind Junko and Anmaat. Steps up to 1m 4f here and is in the best form of these despite the 216-day break. If resuming in the same form, he’s the one to beat.
