St Leger Festival, Doncaster 2018

St Leger Festival Race

Spring Loaded ridden by Joey Haynes wins The William Hill Portland Handicap Stakes, during day four of the William Hill St. Leger Festival at Doncaster Racecourse.

Situated at Doncaster Racecourse, St Leger Festival was founded in 1776 and is one of the most reputable horse racing events in the UK. It regularly takes place in September, houses over 65,000 visitors, and is made up of four days of racing action. While Doncaster Racecourse is home to a large number of races throughout the year, The William Hill St Leger Festival is a key highlight on their sporting calendar.

Each day has different reasons to attend, kicking off on Day One with St Leger Legends Day, where former jockeys return to the track to take part in The Leger Legends race for charity. Day Two then features the customary DFS Ladies day, Day Three is made up of a far rarer Gentleman’s Day, and the final day features the famous St Leger Stakes.

All festivals have one race that stands out ahead of all others. The St Leger race that brings the most visitors to South Yorkshire is the St Leger Stakes, which is hailed as being the world’s oldest British Classic.
