Taunton Racecourse

Technically still the youngest National Hunt course in the UK, Taunton Racecourse first opened in 1927 and to this day remains a popular destination for locals and horse racing fans alike. It was also the youngest UK racecourse in its own right until Great Leighs - which is now Chelmsford City Racecourse - opened back in 2008.

Taunton Racecourse is situated in Orchard Portman in Somerset and lies two miles south of its namesake country town. It’s also close to the residence of established champion trainer, Paul Nicholls, whose novices regularly feature at the racecourse.

As it is a jump track it hosts around 15 fixtures each year and these feature across the winter jump season. However, much like Taunton itself, the venue isn’t as big as other similarly popular racecourses and its fixtures tend to sell out fairly quickly. Those that are lucky enough to get to the racing at Taunton are able make the most of its top facilities and race day experiences.

Taunton Racecourse Betting

One of the thrills of horse racing is being able to place bets and Taunton races is of course no exception. Better still, the venue caters to the needs of regular racegoers and novices alike and offers a variety of betting options.

If you prefer the more traditional approach, there are several bookmakers in front of the Orchard Stand, as well as specific betting shops located under the stand itself. You can also purchase Taunton racecards at the enclosure entrance for £3 if you want to get some additional Taunton tips, these sometimes also feature a rundown of previous Taunton racing results.

You also have the option to visit one of the Totepool betting windows that you’ll be able to find in several areas around the course.

Jump Racing at Taunton

Taunton Racecourse Map

Taunton is a right-handed and sharp turf track. Naturally, as a jumps course an experienced horse is a big positive, particularly as the hurdles races can be very quick. This can also be exacerbated by the downhill run you get towards the third-to-last fence.

What’s more, even though the fences aren’t especially big, it’s important to note that there’s a casualty rate - often this is down to a lack of experience in handling both the jumps and the fast nature of the course.

Sometimes the winter conditions can make the track more difficult, but on the whole it’s a fair course. This has also been helped by the quality of the soil, plus the recently installed reservoir.

How to get to Taunton Racecourse

There are a number of ways you can get to Taunton Racecourse. You can drive to the venue (it’s located on the B3170) and make the most of the free parking that’s available off the main road that approaches the course. Coach and minibus parking is also an option and if you are travelling by vehicle, be sure to use the following address and postcode:

  • Taunton Racecourse Company Ltd
  • Orchard Portman
  • Taunton
  • Somerset
  • TA3 7BL
  • Tel: 01823 337172

There are some bus routes from Taunton itself, but these don’t run regularly and you’re instead advised to book a taxi if you plan on getting to the course directly from the town. The town is also served by trains and you can get plenty of direct connections from many major cities.
