ITV Racing Tips for Today - Wednesday 6th May

ITV Racing are live from Chester for Day One of the three day May meeting. With six live races for the afternoon, featuring the Chester Vase as a Derby trial for the colts, the Cheshire Oaks for the fillies and a strong looking handicap chase from Newton Abbot, we've taken a deeper look into all six contests for our tips and selections for the afternoon.

Wait Geordie 9/4

Got off the mark on debut at Bath last month, looking professional for his first outing and making all the running, pulling away to a decisive win. The form of the race looks solid with the 3rd and the 6th both coming out and winning since and the 2nd going close in a maiden. Huge Palmer has won the race before and saddles a strong looking favourite for this year, well drawn to be aggressive out the gates and will have learnt plenty in his debut win.

Somespring Special 11/1

Won in good style at the end of last season in a race that’s worked out well since and ran in a deep contest on her seasonal return. Wasn’t suited by a tactical speed test in a 3 runner contest over 2 miles when last seen but back up in trip and to a venue she’s run well at before. More than well enough handicapped off a mark of 123 to get involved.

Divine Libra 8/1

A course winner over a slightly shorter trip and a good 5th in a deep renewal of this race off a higher mark last year leaves Divine Libra looking a nice E/W angle into this contest. Following a similar path to 2024 with a prep run at Newmarket, he’ll be fully wound up off that effort and handicapped to win a race at this level.

Amelia Earhart 11/4

I’m skeptical of the form of odds on favourite I’m The One, winning a very ordinary looking maiden in good style and she could well be found out here against Aidan O’Brien’s fillies. The Irish trainer has won 6 of the last 10 renewals of this race with Ryan Moore riding all six and they combine with Emilia Earhart here. She got off the mark when upped in trip at the end of last season and on breeding will relish this move to 12 furlongs. Headgear goes on to draw out that little extra from her and she can further enhance her jockey and trainers record in this race.

Benvenuto Cellini 6/5

Represents last year’s winning connections in Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore and showed good form as a juvenile until being bogged down by heavy ground at Doncaster on his last run of the season. Nicely progressive before that run and captured a Group Two in good style on quick ground at Leopardstown. Likely more to come now upped in trip and is rated 11lbs clear of the field.

Angel Love 11/1

Has good form in the books from last season around tight turning tracks, winning when last seen in November over 6 furlongs at Wolverhampton, winning easily by 4.5 lengths. Looks to have gotten away lightly with an opening handicap mark of 83 and a wide draw isn’t too off putting with the last two winners of this race coming from wide berths. Looks nicely treated and well suited to this kind of speed test.
