Broome will be the ride of William Buick, as Aidan O’Brien chases a second consecutive Goodwood Cup. On his previous start, the seven-year-old was well beaten in the G1 Ascot Gold Cup, as he finished back in tenth behind Courage Mon Ami.

Broome won the G2 Dubai Gold Cup over two miles at Meydan earlier in the season, but his only win on British soil since September 2021 was secured in the G2 Hardwicke Stakes in June 2022.

Enemy

Age: 6
Weight: 9-11
OR: 109
Days: 68

Enemy will be one of the outsiders in the field this week after winning just three from 21 career starts on the turf. The six-year-old is also winless in nine starts in stakes company.

The Ian Williams-trained runner was last seen finishing a disappointing fifth over two miles at Sandown in the G3 Henry II Stakes. On the basis of that effort, it appears hard to make a case for the ride of Richard Kingscote.

Quickthorn

J: Tom Marquand

Age: 6
Weight: 9-11

Days: 45

Hughie Morrison’s runner in the Goodwood Cup on Tuesday is Quickthorn. Tom Marquand takes the ride on the six-year-old, who was last seen landing success over a mile and six in the Race To The Ebor Grand Cup Stakes.

That was a pleasing return to form, but he has something to find over two miles after being well held by Broome in Meydan in March and 14 lengths behind Coltrane in the G2 Lonsdale Cup Stakes last year.

Ocean Wind is the runner for Roger Teal in the Goodwood Cup on Tuesday. The seven-year-old was third on his previous start, finishing three and a half lengths behind Yibir over two miles at Sandown.

That was a pleasing enough return to action after a 771-day break, and he could have each-way possibilities if back at the level that saw him finish within a length of Stradivarius in the G3 Sagaro Stakes in April 2021.

Rossa Ryan

Lone Eagle

J: Rossa Ryan
T: Ralph Beckett

Age: 5
Weight: 9-11

Days: 40

Rossa Ryan will ride Ralph Beckett-trained Lone Eagle on Tuesday. The five-year-old was outclassed on his previous outing, as he finished ninth of 12 in the G1 Ascot Gold Cup.

He has won twice in eleven starts in stakes company, with the most recent of those coming at Goodwood in May 2021. Lone Eagle has struggled for form on his recent outings, and connections will be hopeful of a comeback.

Oisin Murphy

Coltrane

J: Oisin Murphy
T: Andrew Balding
N/A
Age: 6
Weight: 9-11

Days: 40

Coltrane battled hard with Courage Mon Ami in the G1 Ascot Gold Cup, but was eventually beaten by three-quarters of a length. The six-year-old was emphatic on his reappearance earlier in the year, beating Wise Eagle by nearly five lengths over two miles in the G3 Sagaro Stakes.

He finished fourth of nine in the race last year, but is incredibly consistent and will likely be in the first three under the stewardship of Oisin Murphy.

James Doyle

Tashkhan

J: James Doyle

Age: 5

James Doyle takes the ride on Tashkhan in the Goodwood Cup. On his previous start, the five-year-old finished third of five in the G3 John Smith’s Silver Cup.

However, that loss extended his record in stakes company to ten without a win. A run over two miles could suit him at Goodwood, but seeing him win in this company is a big ask.

Emily Dickinson

J: Ryan Moore
T: A P O'Brien
N/A
Age: 4
Weight: 9-8
OR: 111
Days: 10

Aidan O’Brien trains Emily Dickinson, as last year’s winning connections chase a second straight success in the Goodwood Cup. The four-year-old filly was in excellent form on her previous outing, as she landed the G2 Curragh Cup over a mile and six furlongs.

That was an excellent return to form after a solid fourth in the G1 Ascot Gold Cup. This trip will suit her, and she could be the biggest danger to Courage Mon Ami.

J: David Egan
T: Roger Varian
N/A
Age: 4
Weight: 9-11

Roger Varian trains Eldar Eldarov, and he will be the ride of David Egan on Tuesday. The four-year-old won the G1 St Leger in 2022, before finishing seventh of eight in the G2 British Champions Long Distance Cup.

On his first start this year, he finished a decent second behind Giavellotto in the G2 Yorkshire Cup Stakes over a mile and six. He never looked comfortable in the G1 Ascot Gold Cup, and eventually finished seventh of 12; over ten lengths behind Courage Mon Ami.

Giavellotto

J: Andrea Atzeni
T: Marco Botti
N/A
Age: 4
Weight: 9-11
OR: 113
Days: 74

Giavellotto could be a value angle this week for trainer Marco Botti. Andrea Atzeni takes the ride on the four-year-old. In mid-May, he was impressive in the G2 Yorkshire Cup Stakes, as he beat Eldar Eldarov by half a length.

That was his first success on his fourth start in graded company. Giavellotto has made just one previous start over two miles, as he finished ninth of 15 in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup.

Frankie Dettori

Courage Mon Ami

J: Frankie Dettori
T: John & Thady Gosden
N/A
Age: 4
Weight: 9-11
OR: 118
Days: 40

Courage Mon Ami will be looking to land success in the second leg of the Stayers’ Triple Crown. He was excellent over two miles and four furlongs at Ascot in June, beating Coltrane by three-quarters of a length in the Ascot Gold Cup.

That win secured a career-high official rating of 121, and he is now unbeaten over four career starts. Courage Mon Ami won over a mile and six at Goodwood earlier this season, and the four-year-old appears challenging to overlook for Frankie Dettori.
