Altior

Altior Horse

Through sire High Chaparral, who won the Epsom Derby in 2002, and dam Monte Solaro, who notably won two National Hunt races, Altior was born with a pedigree in success. He was foaled in 2010 and trained by Nicky Henderson, who’s been victorious as a professional trainer with sixty winning horses at Cheltenham Festival alone.

Even with so much prestige in the world of horse racing, Nicky Henderson is bound to rate Altior as one of his greatest achievements, currently ranking as one of the best racehorses in circulation. From becoming so prolific in the races he’s run in, the Altior odds have become gradually shorter, but that’s not to say you won’t find a fair bookmaker price from backing him ante post, especially with all major race meetings being priced up so early.

Altior Races

Sitting with a record of fifteen wins from seventeen runs, Altior has been able to keep the level of consistency that only top racehorses are capable of achieving. His first major win came in the 2015 Cheltenham Festival, finishing first in the Sharp Novices’ Hurdle. He carried this sort of form into 2016 with wins at the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, the Henry VIII Novices’ Chase at Sandown, and the Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase at Kempton.

It was a sign of his quality that he could take successive wins in the Celebration Chase at Sandown over 2017 and 2018, as well as successive wins at the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury over 2017 and 2018. Winning at Cheltenham Festival is always bound to be a gauge of any horse’s standard, which Altior proved best in his Queen Mother Champion Chase win in 2018 and his Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase win in 2017.

Altior At Cheltenham

All of the UK and Ireland’s best horses are judged on their performances at Cheltenham Festival, and Altior hasn’t disappointed in proving his ability as being among the best of the best. Taking four wins at Cheltenham might not seem like the most astounding of tallies, but the fact that Altior sits with a 100% record at the country’s most challenging four-day horse racing event is an indication of how special he really is.

The 2018 edition of The Festival saw a win in the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase, where he finished first with a starting price of 1/1. In the previous entry at Cheltenham, Altior won the 2017 Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy, impressively going from being half a length down to winning the race convincingly. Other wins at Cheltenham Festival include a SkyBet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle win in 2016 and a SkyBet Supreme Trial Novices’ Hurdle win in 2015.
