Tuesday Throwback Race Of The Day - 18/05/21

Phoenix Of Spain

Today's edition of throwback race of the day moves onto the 2019 renewal of the Irish 2000 Guineas with British raider Phoenix Spain landing the event for trainer Charles Hills.

The talented grey had shown clear signs as a juvenile that he could turn out to be a very smart horse as a three year old, finishing second in the Group Two Champagne Stakes at Doncaster and then heading back there over a mile to again finish a narrow second in the Group One Vertem Futurity Trophy Stakes.

He was not seen again until heading to The Curragh on his seasonal debut and under a superb ride by Jamie Spencer went on to land the Irish 2000 Guineas.

He managed to get the better of superstar Too Darn Hot, who had previously beat him as a juvenile, but after that performance he never won again.

He was tried in the St James's Palace Stakes, Sussex Stakes, Prix du Moulin and then Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on British Champions Day and unfortunately never showed the form of his Irish Classic win.

Enjoy!
