ITV Racing Tips for Today - Saturday 28th February

ITV Racing are live from three courses on Saturday 28th February, with graded action coming from Kelso and some top competitive handicaps from Newbury and Doncaster. With 10 live races across the cards, we've gone through all of them to pick out our selections and tips for the afternoon.

Doyen Du Bar 5/1

Fairly low mileage for a 10 year old who showed good form as a novice chaser over 2 miles last season and quite clearly didn’t stay over an extended 2.5 miles at Market Rasen last time out. Eases back slightly in grade and back down to 2 miles, he looks the class angle in this race for Nicky Richards.

Barra Rua 4/1

Makes the trip over from Ireland for Emmett Mullins and has been running in some highly competitive contests of late, including a good 4th in a deep handicap hurdle at the Dublin Racing Festival last time out. The Irish novice hurdlers tend to be a class apart from the British stock and her graded and listed form so far this campaign rates as the strongest in this field. Stays 3 miles well and will likely be a class above the rest.

Protektorat 1/7

Showed he retains plenty of ability at 11 years old at Windsor, winning the Fleur de Lys Chase in good style again. Gets into this listed contest without any penalties and is rated 20lbs clear of the field. Will prove far too classy for his rivals in this.

Mighty Bandit 15/8

Progressive as a novice chaser, bumping into a talented rival at Newbury on chase debut who’s since gone on to graded success, Mighty Bandit has followed up with 2 handicap chase victories since. Won well despite a shuddering error last time out and another 8lbs rise in the weights still likely hasn’t gotten to the bottom of him in this sphere. Can make it a hat-trick of handicap chase wins here.

Starmount 7/2

Ben Jones and Ben Pauling is the red hot combination to keep on side at the minute and Starmount making the long trip up to Kelso for this catches the eye. Arriving 2 from 3 over hurdles, the only blemish on his record coming in a Grade One with half the hurdles omitted at Aintree. Made all the running in fine style at Wetherby under a penalty last time out and will relish this slightly extended distance.

Dartmoor Pirate 13/2

Has relished the step up to staying trips over fences and ran out a smart winner of the Great Yorkshire Chase at this course last time out. A 5lbs rise in the weights looks very fair and there’s likely more progress to come over this slightly longer distance. Two wins from three handicap chases so far, he can defy the handicapper once again.

Jet To Vegas 11/1

Represents a potential bit of class and value in this field, winning the Grade Two novice event on this card last year before a remote 4th in a Aintree Grade One Novice event. Things haven’t quite worked out over fences this season but reverts back to hurdles off a very lenient looking mark of 135. Well treated on his best form, goes well at this venue and Russell/Scudamore yard have hit some form.

Eldorado Allen 5/1

Classy in his heyday and returned to action this season in veteran ranks when winning over an inadequate looking 2.5 miles at Cheltenham. Found quicker ground testing his pace at Cheltenham on his penultimate outing and didn’t quite have the quality for the Fleur de Lys last time out. Up in trip, back into veteran’s company and off a mark of 145. Can return to form with ideal conditions.

Bold Light 9/1

Broke his maiden over hurdles at this venue and won over C+D last March off a handicap mark of 123. Struggled at the start of the season off an elevated mark over hurdles and a short spell chasing hasn’t suited either. However, his substandard form this season has seen him fall to a mark of 120. Lines up here 3lbs lower than his last winning rating and incredibly well treated on last season’s hurdle form.

Vincenzo 11/4

A shade unlucky to be 2nd twice at Cheltenham this season in strong grade 3 handicaps but got his head back in front at Kempton last time out. Was run down late in this race last year when looking like an easy winner by a Sean Bowen masterclass. Lines up a better horse this year and a mark of 142 is well within his scope.
