ITV Racing Tips for Today - Saturday 24th January

It's Cheltenham Trials day and ITV Racing are live from both jumps HQ and Doncaster on Saturday 24th January. Five live races from Cheltenham, featuring the Unibet Hurdle and Sir Gino taking on The New Lion, while later in the card Impose Toi looks to enhance his Stayers's Hurdle credentials in the Cleeve Hurdle. We've taken a look at all the live races and picked out our selections and tips for the day.

Kicour La 11/2

Came 2nd in a point to point on heavy ground before winning a maiden hurdle at Leicester on soft ground well in November. Backed that effort up under a penalty again on heavy ground back over the same course and distance, winning by 13 lengths. It’s hard to assess the forms strength currently but he’s right at home on deep, really testing ground and should have the stamina for this kind of test. An eye-catching RPR of 135 last time out sets the standard in this field.

Uncle Bert 9/1

This looks like the perfect test for Uncle Bert, a stiff 2.5 miles on soft ground should bring out the best in him. An impressive winner at Aintree on seasonal comeback showed he’s matured enough to handle fences now and thumped Peter Marsh 2nd Richmond Lake by 9 lengths. Was tiring in the Welsh National when falling last time out, the marathon trip just asking too much of his stamina. Down in trip and only 6lbs higher than his last winning mark, he can put in another bold bid under Sam Twiston-Davies.

Jetara 3/1

Won this race last year under James Bowen in determined fashion, just getting the better of Kateira in a tight finish. Has been up against the geldings in her two outings over hurdles this season and usually saves her best form for against her own sex, being a well beaten 7th in the Christmas Hurdle at Leopardstown when last seen. Will find this a much easier assignment despite her penalty and is clear top rated in the field. Needs to bounce back to form but relishes a gritty stamina test.

Iceo Madrik 8/1

Came 3rd in the X-Country race here in December, just making a couple of little mistakes and probably going a little too hard in front on quick ground. Gets a nice pull in the weights with Final Orders who’s 9lbs higher in the handicap than for the December win and Iceo Madrid should be more at home on now the underfoot conditions are slower. Lines up off the same mark and should be in the mix again for David Cottin.

Docpickedme 15/2

Goes well at this venue and trip, winning twice and coming 2nd in his three attempts over track and trip over fences. Won this last year in convincing fashion off a mark of 129 under Charlie Maggs and has had a good prep into the race this year winning over C+D last month. Only raised 2lbs in the market, he’s only slightly higher in the weights than for his 2 wins here and should put in another bold bid once again under Charlie Maggs.

Grey Dawning 8/11

Goes well fresh and looks to have been given a good opportunity to get his head in front again after a fantastic win in the Betfair Chase when last seen. Seems to handle any type of ground and doesn’t look like he has much to deal with in this field, Spillane’s Tower is unproven left handed and Venetia Williams is struggling to find winners. Classiest horse in the field, goes well fresh and should confirm his superiority in an average looking Cotswolds renewal.

Sir Gino 4/9

He’s no price at all but Sir Gino should be incredibly hard to beat in this for Nicky Henderson. Despite having a life and career threatening injury last year, he returned to racing and the winners enclosure when winning the Christmas Hurdle last month in emphatic fashion. Blowing away reigning Champion hurdler Golden Ace by 6 lengths, not being asked for maximum effort by de Boinville. Should maintain his unbeaten record here.

Impose Toi 5/6

Has turned into a really strong staying hurdler for Nicky Henderson this season, winning a handicap at Aintree with ease on seasonal comeback before winning both the Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury and the Grade One Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot. Looks to take this race in before going for the Stayer’s Hurdle in March and holds Strong Leader on form on his last two runs. Should be hard to beat again before heading back here in March.
