Broome

Aiden O’Brien has one in this York contest on Friday with Broome, the seven-year-old who won the Group Two Dubai Gold Cup over two miles on his latest outing, with Siskany and Quickthorn finishing behind the horse. Apart from that Meydan victory, Broome struggled a bit in 2022 after winning Group Two Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, finishing outside the top three of contests on six different occasions.

Those runs were all in good company and probably has more of a chance in this. The runners Broome beat in the Dubai Gold Cup are likely to do better but you cannot dismiss the seven-year-old here. Ryan Moore is on board.

Get Shirty

J: Jason Watson
T: David O'Meara
N/A
Age: 7
Weight: 9-3
OR: 109

David O’Meara has the current market outsider for this contest in the form of Get Shirty. The seven-year-old arrives here on the back of finishing last of 15 in the Group Two Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan a couple of months ago, but was found to have bled there and can do better here. He won four times in the UK in 2022, including victories at Haydock and Hamilton at class two level.

This will require more and while he’s not completely ruled out, he would be an unlikely winner, much like Tashkan. Jason Watson does the steering here.

Oisin Murphy

Quickthorn

J: Oisin Murphy
T: Hughie Morrison
N/A
Age: 6
Weight: 9-3
OR: 113
Days: 55

Hughie Morrison sends one to the Yorkshire Cup Stakes at York on Friday with his gelding Quickthorn. The six-year-old had an indifferent 2022, winning three times at Sandown, ParisLongchamp and here at York, all in grouped company but has been below-par since.

He was sixth in the Group One Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp (won by Kyprios), fifth in Group Two Champions Long Distance Cup (won by Trueshan) and sixth in Group Two Dubai Gold Cup over 2m at Meydan a couple of months ago.

Has been backed into favourite here and it would be no surprise if he was to bounce back and do well here. Oisin Murphy is booked to ride, and we should see a big run.

William Buick

Siskany

J: William Buick
T: Charlie Appleby
N/A
Age: 5
Weight: 9-3
OR: 116

Charlie Appleby sends one to this contest at York on Friday with Siskany. The five-year-old has been in good form of late, winning Group Three Nad Al Sheba Trophy at Meydan in February before second to Broome in the Group Two Dubai Gold Cup at the same course a month later. Apart from finishing eighth in the Group Three Legacy Cup Stakes at Newbury last September, Siskany has been regularly featuring in the top fours of races for a while.

Appleby will be hoping he can go one better here after finishing second in the Dubai Gold Cup and he should be running a big race here and looks backable at around 4/1 in the market currently. William Buick is booked to ride.

Tashkhan

J:
T: Brian Ellison
N/A
Age: 5
Weight: 9-3
OR: 108
Days: 19

Brian Ellison boasts one in the Yorkshire Cup Stakes at York on Friday with Tashkan. The five-year-old is winless since winning class two handicap at Haydock but has been finishing in the top three a few times since including third in this last term behind Thunderous and Stradivarius as well as third in the Group One Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp in October.

Less places will be on offer here with it being a seven-runner race, but he is not dismissed, although would be an unlikely winner.

Eldar Eldarov

J: David Egan
T: Roger Varian
N/A
Age: 4
Weight: 9-8
OR: 116
Days: 216

Roger Varian boasts one in the Yorkshire Cup Stakes with four-year-old Eldar Eldarov. The colt has won four of his six career runs so far, including Group Two Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot and career-best Group One St Leger Stakes at Doncaster, beating the likes of Haskoy and New London to victory.

Ended 2022 with his only real poor effort to finish seventh in Group Two Long Distance Cup at Ascot, behind the likes of Quickthorn, Coltrane and winner Trueshan but is the type to bounce back and a group one winner cannot be taken lightly.

Andrea Atzeni

Giavellotto

J: Andrea Atzeni
T: Marco Botti
N/A
Age: 4
Weight: 9-3
OR: 111
Days: 55

Marco Botti sends one to the Yorkshire Cup Stakes on Friday with Giavellotto. The four-year-old finished in the top three of six races in 2022, including wins at Newcastle (C4), and Newmarket (C2). His best efforts in this sort of company have come in the Group One St Leger Stakes (third) and a listed event at Ascot (second) but was a disappointing ninth in the Group Two Dubai Gold Cup a couple of months ago, where Broome was first and Siskany second.

His form in 2022 means he cannot be dismissed, but that last run was below-par. Andrea Atzeni is on board here.
