Another runner for the Johnston’s in the shape of West End Charmer. Only really finding success in low level handicaps over the years, he seemed to find his niche over 10 furlongs in handicaps. Scoring smartly off a mark of 100 before going close at Royal Ascot in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes.

His form has tailed off since however. He’s tried to make the step up to listed company since but has failed to make his presence felt.

Gelded at the start of this season, he’s run well in a brace of listed contests over 10 furlongs, shaping like he needs further.

Stepping up in trip should suit but it’s his first dip into group company and he could find himself exposed to better rivals.

Living Legend

Weight: 9-11
OR: 110

After only a handful of runs by the end of his 3 year old campaign, Living Legend was gelded by Mark Johnstone to try to draw out further improvement.

Despite winning 3 of his 5 career starts at the time he moved into listed company and looked well outclassed. The son of Camelot then spent over 800 days off the track and took a while to find his feet.

Having his first three runs in handicaps, he scored at a lower level over 10 furlongs before another defeat off a lofty mark of 101.

He’s been busy this season. Having a couple of decent outings on the all weather, he went close twice before capturing a listed race in a narrow success.

He took a major step forward off the back of that to win a conditions race and then a group 2 win at Newmarket. Scoring in the Jockey Club Stakes to easily brush aside Yibir.

His form has dipped off since however. Coming last in the Coronation cup and being beaten a long way, he was last seen filling the last spot in the Hardwicke Stakes.

He needs to seriously improve on his last two outings to have any kind of chance here.

Seemingly the third string for Godolphin, Charlie Appleby’s Global Storm comes here off the back of a decent outing in the Jorvik handicap.

Mainly seen in handicaps throughout his career, the 5 year old had a good season last year. Despite being beaten on his first two outings, he scored when upped in trip to 14 furlongs at Ascot handily. A good 3rd in the Copper Horse Stakes followed. He ran well at this meeting last year to be 2nd in the Bet365 Trophy.

His form tailed off after however as the handicapper seemingly had his number off a mark of 104. A trip to Meydan in the Spring of this year bore fruit and he scored a handicap over 12 furlongs before going close behind Hukum in a group 2.

Returning to England in handicap company saw him run well off a mark of 106. He looks well worth another go at this level and his form with Hukum couldn’t have worked out much better.

Yibir

After looking like a smart 2 year old, Yibir had a terrific 3 year old campaign last year. Running well in good races at the start of the season, he took a major step forward after being gelded.

Winning a group 3 at this meeting last year handily, he failed to settle at Goodwood on his next outing and pulled his chances away to follow up. Settling much better next time out he easily captured group 2 success when winning the Great Voltigeur Stakes.

A trip to the US rounded out the season with 2 brilliant displays. Scoring a conditions race with bundles in hand before winning the Breeders' Cup Turf, collaring Broome at the line.

His exploits last season may have got the better of him however and he hasn’t returned in the same form this year. Coming a narrow 2nd in the Sheema Classic before being overturned at short odds by Living Legend in the Jockey Club Stakes.

Sent back to America for his last run, he was sent off a short price favour for the Man o’War Stakes but failed to justify the odds to only come home in 3rd. He needs to put his best foot forward to get his season back on track.

Despite struggling to find his feet initially in maiden and novice company, New Mandate really got rolling in handicap company. Scoring with ease off a mark of 81 before moving onto bigger and better things.

Scoring a list race at Doncaster by a head, he then moved up to a mile and got up late at Newmarket to score a group 2 smartly. A trip over to America for the Breeder’s Cup proved fruitless as he failed to beat a rival home.

Only seen once last season, he contested the Jersey Stakes and weakened quickly out of proceedings. Given another year off, he returned at Ascot bak in April with a tight listed win over a mile.

Well outclassed in the Lockinge Stakes after that, connections tried him over 10 furlongs last time out where he failed to make any impression.

He moves up in trip again and needs to prove he’s got the quality to get involved and has the stamina to get home.

Jim Crowley

Mostahdaf

J: Jim Crowley
T: John & Thady Gosden
N/A
Age: 4
Weight: 9-8
OR: 116
Days: 19

A relatively lightly raced sort for the Gosdens, Mostahdaf has only been seen nine times. After making a striking debut last March, he scored handily over a mile in a conditions race.

He backed that effort smartly to garner listed success. Moved into group 1 company off the back of that saw him well outclassed.

He rounded out the season in style however and handily won another listed race before gaining group success at Newmarket to win a group 3 smartly.

He’s returned in much the same form this year. Winning a group 3 on return with bundles in hand against a small field, he was unable to live with Bay Bridge in the Brigadier Gerard on his next outing.

Last seen in the Hardwicke Stakes trying 12 furlongs for the first time, he ran smartly to be best of the rest behind Broome. He’s well worth another try at this trip and won’t find a group 1 horse lurking in this field.
