Cox Plate Runner-by-Runner Guide

Winx - 1/4

Trainer: Chris Waller

Jockey: Hugh Bowman

Classy seven-year-old Mare with 28 consecutive wins dating back to May 2015. Sublime turn off foot and the likely winner.

Has more on plate than last year. Constantly takes on same horses. Looking to make it record fourth victory in race.

Benbatl - 11/2

Trainer: Saeed Bin Suroor

Jockey: Oisin Murphy

Main reason for Winx not being shorter. Jet-Setting three-time Group 1 winner suited to this trip.

Won on these shores in Grade 1 last time proving he can give favourite something to think about. Hits the frame.

Humidor - 12/1

Jockey: Darren Weir

Trainer: Damian Lane

Over two lengths behind Benbatl last time. Finished only half a length behind Winx last year. Surprising Group 1 victory at Caulfield shows six-year-old still retains ability but only likely to play supporting role.

Avilius - 16/1

Trainer: James Cummings

Jockey: Glyn Schofield

Whilst the four-year-old is unbeaten in four starts since heading to Australia in August the highest grade of those victories was at Group 3 level. The geldings form in France is less impressive with the best victory being at Listed level.

Kings Will Dream - 25/1

Trainer: Darren Weir

Jockey: John Allen

Has not won a race since a maiden at Pontefract in July 2017. Did only go down two lengths in Flemington Group 1 in September. Far more on plate here and first-time blinkers tried.

D’Argento - 25/1

Trainer: Chris Waller

Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy

Without a win since March but consistently hits the frame at Group level. Went down three length third to Winx in August and will need to find more. Each-way claims.

Rostropovich - 25/1

Trainer: A P O’Brien

Jockey: Ryan Moore

Has been shown not to be quite up to Group 1 level in Britain. Potential front-runner. Won a Group 3 at Leopardstown last time out but certainly needs to find more to give the principals anything to think about.

Savvy Group - 33/1

Trainer: Michael & Matthew Pitman

Jockey: Chris Johnson

The least exposed in the race having only seen a racetrack six times. Last victory was a career best to win a Group 1 in New Zealand by two lengths. Hard to ascertain what she has beaten but interesting all the same.
