Breeders Cup Turf Runner by Runner

1. Talismanic

Trainer – Andre Fabre

Jockey – Mickael Barzalona

Disappointed in the Arc behind Enable, only beating six of the 19 runners and looked to be fading very quickly. Won a Group 3 and was second in a Group 2 for that preparation, and is a Breeders Cup winner; landing this very race twelve months ago.

2. Enable

Trainer – John Gosden

Jockey – Frankie Dettori

One of the world’s best, dual Arc winner Enable, is the standout runner in this field, and surely is not for catching. Her preparation for the Arc was not ideal; just the one run at Kempton and that was not even on the Turf, yet she still just about prevailed at Longchamp. Gosden has confirmed she is now fully fit, and a verdict on her racing future will be made after this race, when fingers crossed, she puts in another breathtaking performance.

3. Channel Maker

Trainer – William Mott

Jockey – Jose Ortiz

Won the Turf Classic Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park in September, a good preparation run for this contest here. Surely his efforts will be futile, and won’t bring him near the Queen of Europe.

4. Robert Bruce

Trainer – Chad C Brown

Jockey – Irad Ortiz Jr

First start for a new yard, having moved from William Mott. Second to Channel Maker in the trial for this race, and he finished four lengths off the leader.

5. Magical

Trainer – Aiden O’Brien

Jockey – Ryan Moore

Europe are also highly represented through this daughter of Galileo – Magical, who turned over St Leger second Lah Ti Dar, in the Fillies & Mares Stakes on British Champions Day. It was her career best and she will be looking to build on that here.

6. Arklow

Trainer – Brad Cox

Jockey – Florent Geroux

Two wins this year – most recently in a Grade 3 at Kentucky Downs in September, and looks to be out of his comfort zone here.

7. Glorious Empire

Trainer – James Lawrence II

Jockey – J R Leparoux

Completed a hat-trick of wins when landing the G1 Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga back in August. Looks to be the hosts best chance of success here.

8. Liam The Charmer

Trainer – Michael McCarthy

Jockey – Tyler Gaffalione

Liam The Charmer comes here seeking a hat-trick, after a pair of strong wins at both Santa Anita and Del Mar. Now steps up to this trip for the first time in career.

9. Quarteto De Cordas

Trainer – Ian Wilkes

Jockey – Brian Hernandez Jr

Second in a Group 1 in Brazil most recent, but in the kindest way possible, has not real chance of getting involved here. A step too far.

10. Hi Happy

Trainer – Todd Pletcher

Jockey – Luis Saez

Disappointed when sent off strong favourite at Belmont Park in the Knickerbocker Stakes, another to maybe ignore.

11. Sadler’s Joy

Trainer – Thomas Albertrani

Jockey – Javier Castellano

Good third in the trial for this race which was won by Channel Maker. Won a Grade 2 at Gulfstream Park back in the spring, and may be a shade over-priced at 66/1.

12. Waldgeist

Trainer – Andre Fabre

Jockey – Pierre Charles Boudot

Good fourth in the Arc behind Enable, and arrived at Longchamp having won four on the bounce. Cannot be dismissed here, and represents the best of the French. Should go close.

13. Hunting Horn

Trainer – Aiden O’Brien

Jockey – Wayne Lordan

Possible pacesetter for the rest of the Ballydoyle battalion. Won the Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot, but looking back in reflection, it now looks a very weak race. Probably out of the frame.
