Newmarket Sunday Preview - 02/05/21

The next race at Newmarket is a tight-knitted 1m4f handicap with Global Storm being our each-way suggestion.

This gelding mixed it in some useful handicaps last term and he caught the eye when making significant late progress at Meydan in February.

That race may give him a fitness advantage over some of today’s rivals and he is now 18lb better off than when clashing with Zabeel Champion last July.

One of our best bets on the Sunday at Newmarket is A'Shaari for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin in the Listed Pretty Polly Stakes.

The three year old daughter of Dubawi has only been seen once in her career to date and what a debut it was when getting off the mark at the first time of asking.

She went into a Class 5 Novice Stakes at Newmarket over seven furlongs and on soft ground went on to dominate a decent field including Ready To Venture for William Haggas.

Getting onto better ground should bring more improvement on Sunday and being a full sister to the talented Wuheida, tells us her pedigree suggests she will suit the step up to 1m2f.

The feature race on the Sunday is the 1000 Guineas and we have two each-way selections trained out of Ireland.

Firstly, Mother Earth has a similar profile to Love and Hermosa having had plenty of juvenile experience before stepping into the Guineas and she may be able to put her experience to good use despite a low draw.

She looked to be improving race-to-race last term finishing off with an eye-catching effort at the Breeders’ Cup and the quicker ground conditions today will play to her strengths.

At a bigger price we wouldn’t rule out Thunder Beauty.

This daughter of Night Of Thunder came from last to fifth down the outside in the Moyglare Stud Stakes behind the likes of Shale and Pretty Gorgeous last season and that form alone gives her a chance of hitting the frame.

She followed that up with a poor effort in a French Group 1 however that run can be excused as the ground was bottomless and she now returns to a preferred surface.

We have skipped the 16:15 so the next selection comes in the 16:50 where four go to post over 1m4f.

Annandale looks a typical Mark Johnston improver and he may take some passing if he gets a lead but Charlie Appleby’s Echo Point is bred to appreciate this trip and he finished well on turf debut behind the well-supported Mohaafeth last time out.

He is expected to improve for that effort so this son of Dubawi should go close.

The final race on the card is an open looking handicap with Mark Johnston’s Thunder Of Niagra our selection off top weight.

This colt was thrown into some top class races as a two year old and he should be primed for a big run following his recent comeback effort on the AW at Kempton.

He has stamina in his pedigree so Joe Fanning may deploy a typical ride towards the front of the field.
