How We Pick Our Cheltenham Day Four Tips
By the final day of Cheltenham, there will have been multiple races on both the new and the old courses, although none over the same course and distance as the feature race of the day - the Gold Cup.
How our tipsters pick their Day Four tips depends on the race and the conditions.
The first step is the same regardless of the event. Having followed all of the year's jumps racing, they consider each of the runners and riders chances and compare them to the odds available.
The second step depends on the specific nature of the event. Day Four starts with the Triumph Hurdle - over approximately the minimum distance of two miles, this race for four year olds only often has a short price favourite.
However, because of the young ages of the contenders, there is precious little form to go off, and it is not unusual for large prices to spring surprises. This was especially true in 2025 when Poniros made his jumps debut to win at a huge price of 100/1.
This shock actually led to the BHA changing the rules, and all horses running in the Triumph now must either have or be considered to have a handicap rating of at least 110.
In contrast, runners in the Cheltenham Gold Cup will all generally be well known to all racing fans. Our tipsters have more data and previous form to consider when making their selection in this race.
That means that the puzzle changes, and is instead a balance of comparing older horses with proven form against the younger, slightly less experienced horses who may be stepping up in trip or improving start by start.
Cheltenham Day Four 2026
Unlike other days at the 2026 Festival, there have been no changes to the race order or schedule for this year's running.
There will be minimal impact by changed field sizes, with the County Handicap Hurdle reduced from a maximum of 26 runners to 24, although there were only 16 starters in 2025.
The last race of the day is the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys' handicap hurdle. Expect to see bookings for all of the top jockeys listed in the PJA Conditional Jockeys leaderboard.
A win in this race can catapult a young conditional into the limelight. Previous winners have included Harry Derham, JJ Slevin and Felix de Giles.
