First race of Thursday's racing

The Marsh Novices’ Chase is the opening race of day 3 of Cheltenham Festival, which is usually one of the busiest days of the festival and often this can make for a loud atmosphere.

The race is run over 2 miles and approximately 4½ furlongs on the New Course at Cheltenham. It features 17 fences that test the skill and stamina of the competing horses.To be eligible, horses must be aged five or older. The race holds Grade 1 status and offers substantial prize money of £98,473 to the winner.

History of the Turners Novices’ Chase

The race is a relatively recent addition to the Cheltenham Festival, having been introduced in 2011. It was created in response to calls for a shorter novice chase alternative to the RSA Novices' Chase, which takes place the previous day.

Jewson initially sponsored the race, transferring their sponsorship from another Festival event. However, the race didn't achieve Grade 1 status until 2014, with the 2015 running being the first held at that prestigious level.

After Jewson's sponsorship ended in 2014, insurance brokers JLT took over. JLT remained the race sponsor until 2020 when Marsh took over the role. In 2022, the transport company Turners became the title sponsor. Although no longer the official sponsor, many still refer to the race as the "JLT" due to their long association.

Recent years

The Turners Novices' Chase has seen exciting finishes in recent years. While Ireland dominated for a stretch, Britain broke their streak with Barry Geraghty's victory on Defi du Seuil in 2019 for Phillip Hobbs and JP McManus. It marked Geraghty's first win in the race after Ruby Walsh's three-year winning streak.
