The Champion Bumper, which is officially known as the Weatherbys Champion Bumper for sponsorship purposes, is a Grade 1 National Hunt flat race that is open to horses aged four to six. It is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham over a distance of about 2 miles and ½ a furlong and is scheduled to take place annually on the Wednesday of the Cheltenham Festival.

Final race of ladies Day

The Champion Bumper is the concluding race on Ladies’ Day, which is the Wednesday of the Festival.

The bumper is the last race of the week that is run on the Old Course. This is because, on the Thursday and the Friday of the Festival, racing switches to the New Course.

The race is run over a distance of about two miles and horses must be aged four to six in order to run. The Champion Bumper is the most prestigious flat race or ‘bumper’ in the National Hunt calendar and it has a history of featuring horses that go on to become leading performers over obstacles, such as Florida Pearl and Cue Card.

The race often uses a mixture of jockeys, including both amateurs and leading jockeys from flat racing.

The Champion Bumper offers a total prize fund of £80,000, with the winner receiving £45,560. This is the lowest amount available for any of the Festival’s Grade 1 races.

History of the Champion Bumper

The Champion Bumper was first run in 1992, when it was known as the Festival Bumper.

Over the years, the race has been sponsored by a number of different businesses, including both Guinness and Tote. However, since 1997 it has been sponsored by Weatherbys. For this reason, the race is officially titled the Weatherbys Champion Bumper.

Recent years

Historically, the Champion Bumper has been dominated by Willie Mullins, who has won the race 12 times since his first winner in 1996. His wins have come from the following horses:

  • Joe Cullen (2000)
  • Missed That (2005)
  • Cousin Vinny (2008)
  • Champagne Fever (2012)

  • Facile Vega (2022)

So, if you’re in the market for any Champion Bumper tips, it’s hard to look too far past any horse that has been trained by Willie Mullins.

Two jockeys have enjoyed three Champion Bumper victories each with Willie Mullins-trained horses. The first of these was Ruby Walsh, who rode Alexander Banquet (1998), Missed That (2005) and Briar Hill (2013).

The second of these is his own son, Patrick Mullins. An amateur jockey, Patrick Mullins has won the race with Cousin Vinny (2008), Champagne Fever (2012) and Facile Vega (2022).

With three victories apiece, Walsh and Mullins are the leading jockeys in the history of the Champion Bumper.
