With a history that technically dates back to Medieval times, Sandown Park Racecourse is one of the UK’s most well-known and loved courses. It can be found against the rural backdrop of Esher, a town in Surrey that lies close to the border of London.
However, despite the quiet surroundings, racing at Sandown today is nothing short of pure excitement, as the course plays host to an array of spectacular events and meets across the calendar year. This includes a Grade 1 flat race - the famous ‘Eclipse Stakes’ - and five Grade 1 National Hunt races.
Another claim to fame for Sandown is that it is said to have been the Queen Mother’s favourite racecourse. In addition, some of the most famous race horses have graced the turf here, including Arkle and Desert Orchid.
A big part of the whole experience at any Sandown racing fixture is of course being able to have a little flutter, and whether you’re a novice or seasoned racegoer, the course can cater for you.
You have the option to take a more traditional approach and head to one of the betting rings found in front of the Grandstand, or near the course railings. On top of this there are numerous betting shops dotted around the racecourse if this is your preference.
All Sandown horse racing events also have many Totepool betting points around the course. This is different from the bookmakers in that you don’t bet against a bookie, instead the stake you make goes into a pool and how much you win is determined by how many other winning tickets are in that pool as well.
If you want to bet online via your favourite apps you are free to do so, but only ‘Jockey Club’ members will be able to access the course’s free Wi-Fi.
Another thing to note here - as is now the trend at most racecourses - Sandown also operates on a cashless basis and there are no cash machines. However, if you have cash you can use it at selected bookmakers and Totepool points - although contactless payments are still recommended.

The turf flat course is one mile and five furlongs in length and it’s a right-handed, oval-shaped, galloping track where stamina can be a key to success. Interestingly, Sandown has a five furlong straight track that features a steady climb throughout - a short distance that can be tough for the younger runners.
The hurdles races are also run on the same track, however, some steeplechase jump races use a different home straight. So again it’s a right-handed, galloping track that can see a real emphasis on speed and strength. However, during the colder, wetter winter weather, the conditions can make the course much more challenging, so again stamina can be hugely important.
Sandown is one of the most accessible racecourses in the UK. It can be reached by car, rail or by air. Sandown Park is situated just a 10 minute walk from Esher train station and from here you can get to London Waterloo in only 25 minutes. The nearest airport is London Heathrow, which is a 30 minute journey by car.
