The Triumph Hurdle, a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle race, is the prestigious opening contest on the final day of the Cheltenham Festival.
Held on the New Course at Prestbury Park, the race covers approximately two miles and one furlong, with eight hurdles for the horses to clear. Only four-year-old juvenile novice hurdlers are eligible to compete, and the winner receives a substantial prize of £78,333.
The Triumph Hurdle was established in 1939 and originally held at Hurst Park in Surrey, where French-bred horses frequently dominated the early years. After a brief hiatus, the race found a permanent home at Cheltenham in 1965. Initially run during Cheltenham's April meeting, it became a prestigious part of the Festival program in 1968. The Daily Express sponsored the race for a period before The Elite Racing Club took over in 1997, followed by the current sponsor, JCB, in 2002.
The Triumph Hurdle is considered a proving ground for elite young hurdlers, with a history of winners progressing to success in the Champion Hurdle. Four horses have notably achieved victory in both races.
The Triumph Hurdle has seen a pattern of dominance by owner JP McManus, trainer Nicky Henderson, and jockey Barry Geraghty.
Geraghty, McManus' retained rider, holds the record for most Triumph Hurdle wins by a jockey with five victories:

In 2023, Lossiemouth continued the trend of Irish-trained victors for trainer Willie Mullins, a dominant force in recent years.
