The Queen Mother Champion Chase is a one of the key races in the National Hunt calendar. As the feature race on Ladies Day (Wednesday) of the Cheltenham Festival, it's the prestigious third Grade 1 contest of the day.
The race unfolds over 2 miles of the Old Cheltenham Chase Course, presenting 13 challenging fences for the elite competitors to clear. The race's reputation is underscored by the substantial prize pot, with a £225,000 prize awaiting the winner.
The race debuted at the Cheltenham Festival in 1959 as the National Hunt Two-Mile Champion Chase. In 1980, to honor her 80th birthday and lifelong passion for National Hunt racing, it was renamed the Queen Mother Champion Chase. The Queen Mother was a devoted patron of the sport and a successful owner of racehorses.
The race remained unsponsored until 2008 when Seasons Holidays became the first to back the prestigious event. SportingBet then took over from 2011 to 2013, followed by Bet Victor in 2014. Since then, Betway has served as the sponsor, leading to the current title of Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase.
The Queen Mother Champion Chase has seen some thrilling victories in recent years:
Nicky Henderson holds the record for most wins by a trainer with six victories. His success highlights the recent dominance of British trainers in this race; they've won seven of the last nine renewals. Irish trainer Willie Mullins broke the pattern with Energumene's back-to-back victories, so watching for his entries is always wise.
