Three Weekend Eye-catchers

Three Weekend Eye-catchers

This weekend saw some excellent racing with some stand out performances that deserve a mention for either there one off excellent performance or a horse, trainer or jockey to watch out for the future as there performance from either Saturday or Sunday could suggest the world is there oyster.

Jim Crowley Four Timer At Chelmsford

During a flat jockeys career there is many things that with the riders at the top of the sport want to achieve but sometimes never do, for example ride a Group 1 winner, win at the Royal meeting and become Champion jockey.

Jim Crowley can say he has done all three and he has done this by consistently riding winners day after day and Saturday was just another day at the office with an added bonus with him completing a four timer at Chelmsford City.

This Jockey is bang in form and over the last five years has really turned himself into a jockey to be feared and always gains rides in the big races. Off the back of this four timer it made him this weeks top jockey of the week with 8 wins, a brilliant personal achievement for the ex champion jockey.

Godolphin’s Cross Counter Breaks Goodwood Course Record

Godolphin known for being up there as one of the leading owning groups in horse racing only went on to win two races during the Goodwood festival which from there point of view will be disappointing.

However one of those victories was in the Group 3 Gordon Stakes where Cross Counter ran out an emphatic winner as 7/4 second favourite. What was eye-catching about this performance was that it went to break the course record for the distance that was covered in 2 minutes and 31 seconds.

This takes this gelding into the sphere of past winners of this race like Crystal Ocean, Highland Reel and Ulysses who from this went on to be superstars.

This three year old is expected to go to the Melbourne Cup and compete in Australia. If the horse wasn’t gelded then it would of most certainly gone in the St Leger at Doncaster.

Andrea Atzeni Four Timer At Doncaster

Andrea Atzeni is one of the leading jockeys around in flat racing and has proved this once more by not letting Jim Crowley be the only rider to gain a four timer at the weekend.

On Saturday the Italian went to Doncaster instead of Goodwood after riding there all week having some nice winners, his best upon the John Gosden trained Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup. He chose the right decision on the Saturday knowing it would be difficult to win the jockeys title at Goodwood and he went and won four races at Doncaster.

This is one of Atzeni’s greatest spells as a jockey riding Group 1 winners and being massively in form, over the last few years he has turned into a top jockey and more so now is gaining the big rides in the big races.

This saw him join the top of the standings for the week with Crowley on eight wins a piece just being pipped by placings but what a great individual performance from the jockey.
