The July Cup is a Group 1 race over 6 furlongs open to three year olds and above. With there being different tracks at Newmarket it is crucial to know it is run over the July course and not the Rowley Mile.

With it being a race for different age groups and gender of the horse there are stipulations in place to make the race fair. Three year olds have to be a weight of 9 stone with four-year olds and above having to be 6 pound higher at 9 stone 6. Fillies and Mares are also given a 3 pound allowance.

This race is seen in the racing world as one of Britains most valuable and prestigious sprint races and for the winner of this race they are looked upon as Europe’s top sprinter for the year. The field of runners will compete for a prize purse of £500,000 this year with the winner getting £283,550

When the grading system was introduced into racing this race was classed as a Group 2 race but seven years later was upgraded to a Group 1. In 2008 The July Cup became part of the Global Sprint Challenge and the sixth leg of the competition.

The last 10 winners of this race have all been different with only five horses since this races inauguration in 1876 winning back to back July Cups and the last was in 1959.

Trainers in the last ten years of this race have struggled to back up there first win with a second in a short space of time but there is only one trainer who has managed to do this in the last decade and that is Clive Cox.
