After an interesting day one, we take a look at what looks set to be an enthralling day two…

Well, what a day of thrills and spills we had on day one of Punchestown this year. Heavily backed favourites Getabird and Douvan beaten convincingly and then drama in the Novices Chase as Al Boum Photo took out Finian’s Oscar just before the last fence to hand victory to The Storyteller and more importantly a 1-2-3 for Gordon Elliott along with a three week ban for Paul Townend.

15.40 – Adare Manor Opportunity Series Final Handicap Hurdle

Thirsty Work fell last time out when travelling well at Leopardstown. Jessica Harrington has a fine record at this meeting and Thirsty Work could well improve. He has course form finishing second the last time he ran here and the fact he has been fitted with a first-time tongue tie could well benefit him.

16.20 – Louis Fitzgerald Hotel Hurdle

Sire Du Berlais was supported in the market at the Cheltenham Festival and didn’t put in a bad run as he ended up finishing fourth in the Martin Pipe Handicap. That was a field of over 20 runners and this smaller field should suit the horse. Gordon Elliott is the trainer and is gunning for the Irish Trainers Championship and a win here could set him on his way.

16.55 – Irish Daily Mirror Novice Hurdle

We are siding with the Willie Mullins trained Next Destination here. He put in a respectable run at Cheltenham, coming third to two decent types in Black Op and the amazing Samcro. He stayed on very well and the step up in trip should suit him.  Prior to this he had landed a hat-trick and we think he can bounce back to winning ways here. He has a very good record in Ireland and Mullins will be doing all he can to get him on top of his game for this race.

17.30 – Coral Punchestown Gold Cup

This looks a tough race and we are siding with a bet on an outsider here. Sub Lieutenant is a massive price at 40/1. The Henry de Bromhead trained horse is a Punchestown stalwart having run 7 races there and coming in the top 3 5 times. Many of the horses in this race have had a long tough season so therefore there could be a surprise result and Sub Lieutenant is worth an each way bet at 40/1.

18.05 – Racing Post Champ I.N.H Flat Race For The Conyngham Cup

Felix Desjy touched a very short price in his race at Cheltenham and looked certain to go very close to winning the race. On another day it could’ve been a lot different and we think quotes of 10/1 for him to win this race look very big. The Gordon Elliott trained gelding is a great prospect and has won at Punchestown before, we really think this can run a big race at the price.

18.40 – Guinness Handicap Chase

Patricks Park won a valuable handicap back in February at Leopardstown followed by a fifth place finish at Fairyhouse. This looks a tough race but the step up in trip should suit and he should go very close.

19.15 – Weatherbys General Irish Ebf Mares Flat Race

Tintangle made an impressive debut back in February finishing fourth behind eventual Cheltenham bumper winner Relegate. Since then she has won 2 out of her two races and trainer Gordon Elliott has every right to be bullish about her. She’s done very little wrong so far in her short career. If she improves like it looks like she will then she will be very hard to beat here.
