Triumph Hurdle Guide

22. Sir Erec

Trainer - Joseph O'Brien

Jockey -

Strong favourite in the run in and continues to see market favouritism with recent rides being the impressive factors to show he has that something for a festival winner. The preparation races in a large field of 28 runners in December at Leopardstown among the winter festivities and followed it up with another win over a Grade 1 when another favourite under Mark Walsh last time out. Clearly the one to beat for this Triumph Hurdle and impressive recent form backs up this potential.

20. Quel Destin

Trainer - Paul Nicholls

Jockey - Harry Cobden

Strong second favourite and looks unlikely to change in the run in to this race despite winning six in the last seven with five wins in a row in the latest runs. Clear favourite last time out over the hurdles at Haydock back in February but often in a smaller field but ran well over this course in November under Harry Cobden again when 10/3 on good ground. Recent preparation rides for this festival at Haydock in a Class 2 race and made all but will need to find a bit more to get a result on this one and keep the winning form going.

17. Pic D'Orhy

Trainer - Paul Nicholls

Jockey - Sam Twiston-Davies

Likely to be an outside chance among the likes of Sir Erec being the odds on favourite, but this French horse has had a much longer break compared to most and could pay off if reaching the form of late which is restricted to the racecourse Auteuil and often favoured in those races yet has just come off worse twice in the last two races when 8/15f and 3/1 shot last time out. Top yard to contend with and still a good chance to make ground here but only ridden on soft/heavy which could benefit given the potential weather recently.

23. Tiger Tap Tap

Trainer - Willie Mullins

Jockey - R. Walsh

Mullins/Walsh combination again and is often backed for this alone but main contender with Sir Erec when finishing a neck behind Leopardstown in December out of a large 28 field. Will need to find that little extra to find that neck length to reconcile that second. Same course and distance but Sir Erec preferred to with this big race but could put the rivalry to bed if finding that little bit more.

1. Adjali

Trainer - Nicky Henderson

Jockey - Daryl JacobCame third at Cheltenham back in a preparation race in January for the lead up to the festival, under Daryl Jacob that time out too. Favourite in the last three races on soft ground, and travels well on this trip. Last win was at Market Rasen back in December and that win at 4/5f over hurdles and always stays well to the finish so can make all ground and potential here on the start of the Friday racing.

16. Pentland Hills

Trainer - Nicky Henderson

Jockey - Nico de Boinville

Stands a chance here and last time out under Nico de Boinville won in a field of 12 in a class 4 hurdle race when debuted from a Flat season prior to this. Great form over the flats and with three wins in the last 4 is another one to watch out for with trainer Nicky Henderson so shouldn’t be discredited with form and all going in his favour but lack of experience in the hurdles is a similar story for others but this one favoured over many of those inexperienced geldings.

6. Coeur Sublime

Trainer - Gordon Elliott

Jockey - Davy Russell

Win at Down Royal in November under BJ Cooper but is now ridden by the champion jockey Davy Russell again, and among the many Non Runners at Leopardstown in February. Favourite in the last four recent races over hurdles and hasn’t proven a grade 1 pedigree just yet which justifies the outside chances odds but could be one to surprise too given the fall on a grade 2 hurdle at Leopardstown on the last and was in contention while chasing the leaders, so has every right to dismiss the fourth place in the grade 3 in February at Gowran Park.

12. Hannon

Trainer - John McConnell

Jockey - David Noonan

Good form and surprised at Down Royal when coming second in August last year when 33/1. Since stepped up form a class 4 win to Grade 2 and made an impressive impact coming second under David Noonan who rides him this time out too for John McConnell. Could prove to have more potential and shouldn’t be dismissed among others with a bare form.

21. Runrized

Trainer - Willie Mullins

Jockey - D. J. Mullins

Only recent form to show was a fourth place in a large field at Naas on his first hurdle race. But this French gelding mainly preferred over flat could well do well in the trip if improving on that last run. All to make in this run however, and is unlikely to challenge the likes of Sir Erec and Quel Destin who have the experience and wins over hurdles to give that extra needed in a festival hurdle race.

24. French Made

Trainer - Willie Mullins

Jockey - P. Townend

Winning maiden at Clonmel in January for Willie Mullins and should appeal for the name in this given a light form which struggles to place in this sort of race and the odds show little hope as well and will be a shock if he finds anything to get a result this time out.

2. Authorizo

Trainer - Gordon Elliott

Jockey - J. W. Kennedy

Not the most experienced for a festival race such as this but shows much potential that G Elliot enters in the triumph hurdle for his one of only two entries in this race. Favourite last time out at Fairyhouse over a 2m trip but could only place third under JW Kennedy and looks set to be a clear outsider but one that could be a surprise but with a far off third in a grade 3 it may well be asking far too much.

8. Ecco

Trainer - Paul Nicholls

Jockey - Ecco

Another lightly raced gelding and debut on a grade 2 hurdle under Harry Cobden didn’t impress well enough and given that form isn’t likely to step up to this mark. Another Paul Nicholls shot but a great bit of experience for this 4 yo and could see him making more impressive grade 2’s later this season or the next given the trainers form too. Big ask in this and will need to dramatically improve to stand a chance.

15. Nelson River

Trainer - Tony Carroll

Jockey - Harry Bannister

Nelson River’s regular rider takes the saddle again for the festival chance for Tony Carroll. Missed the mark a little last time out in a preparation race at Cheltenham in January but made all in a class 2 grade 2 hurdle race over C&D prior to that when 6/1 on gd/sft ground back in December. Will need to find a lot more on this one though, and many favoured in comparison.
