King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes Guide

1. Cheval Grand

Trainer - Yasuo Tomomichi

Jockey - Oisin Murphy

The first runner in the Group 1 contest is the Japanese raider Cheval Grand who is the most exposed and oldest horse in the field with the seven year old being raced frequently throughout his career in his home country.

He has only raced once this season and he finished a good second in the Dubai Sheema Classic behind Old Persian and at a big price of 33/1 he could run a big race.

He shouldn't have enough to win it but place claims will be the aim especially with Oisin Murphy on board and he will have to be fit after his break off the track.

2. Crystal Ocean

Trainer - Sir Michael Stoute

Jockey - James Doyle

One of the most consistent horses of the season so far and also this horse has took the biggest jump forward this year winning all three of his contests and landing the first Group 1 of his career.

The second favourite Crystal Ocean has been a stand out talent this year and can not be overlooked after winning at the track last time out in the Group 1 Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

James Doyle takes the reigns on him for the first time in his career and the five year old will have to give another career best to challenge Enable but still not ruled out.

3. Defoe

Trainer - Roger Varian

Jockey - Andrea Atzeni

Another gelding that gets the award for the most improved horse of the year with Defoe stepping up to another level this season landing his first Group1 and a win at Royal Ascot.

He landed the Coronation Cup for his trainer Roger Varian at the Epsom Derby meeting , staying on well to land his first ever black type win.

Last time out he proved it was not a fluke and landed the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes over course and distance at the Royal meeting that gives him big place claims.

4. Hunting Horn

Trainer - Aidan O'Brien

Jockey -

The first of four runners for the master Irish trainer and a big outsider at 100/1 but everyone knows what this man can do with his horses.

The four year old has previously won at the track in the Hampton Court Stakes last year at the royal meeting but he has not won since then and it would take a career best to see the colt feature here.

5. Morando

Trainer - Andrew Balding

Jockey - P J McDonald

Morando is another at a big price and for a good reason after finishing fourth in the Hardwicke Stakes behind Defoe and also needing soft ground to really flourish.

The six year old is a talented gelding but looks to be slightly outclassed in this field and it would be a surprise to see him in the frame come the finish.

6. Salouen

Trainer - Sylvester Kirk

Jockey - Jim Crowley

There are many horses in this race that are at a big price with six of the 11 runners 33/1 or above and another of those is Salouen who looks one of the stronger ones of the outsiders.

He is a course and distance winner when scoring on his seasonal debut in a Listed race. He finished third in the Coronation Cup behind Defoe and was poor at the royal meeting in the Hardwicke when finishing 7th out of eight runners.

Will need to be in tip top shape to get in the frame but normally likes racing here.

7. Waldgeist

Trainer - Andre Fabre

Jockey - Pierre-Charles Boudot

This five year old has won some very handy Group 1 contests in France and this season has looked very sharp in both his races.

He started the season at Longchamp and landed the Group 1 Prix Ganay against some strong horses including English raider Ghaiyyath who was hyped up to do great things this season.

Next time out at Royal Ascot he finished a fair third in the Prince Of Wales's Stakes where he did not look out of sorts but will need to improve to get on terms with Crystal Ocean and on that basis can be opposed.

8. Enable

Trainer - John Gosden

Jockey - Frankie Dettori

The superstar Enable will take all the beating in this one as she does in all of her races but off the back of her success on her seasonal debut at Sandown in the Group 1 Coral Eclipse she is the one to beat.

Enable has now won 10 races in a row across three different countries and she was said to only be 90% fit at Sandown which should mean she will be better on Saturday.

She is the 4/6 favourite but it is very tough to see her being beaten.

9. Magic Wand

Trainer - Aidan O'Brien

Jockey -

Magic Wand is the next of the O'Brien quartet and this filly will be receiving a three pound allowance like Enable which should help her but she will have to step up massively to be involved here.

Magic Wand has only finished outside the top three, twice in her last eight races which is fairly impressive but a lot of them have been in lower class races and this will be a step up.

10. Anthony Van Dyck

Trainer - Aidan O'Brien

Jockey -

The Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck is a colt that can not be ruled out and even though he is one of the youngest in the field he has been nothing short of brilliant all season.

On his debut he landed a Derby trial and Lingfield with ease and then went on to take the Classic race in a narrow photo finish.

He tried to do the Derby double when heading to the Curragh but it was not to be being beaten a fair way by his stablemate Sovereign.

He still ran to a good standard that day and with plenty of improvement in his pedigree he is a danger.

11. Norway

Trainer - Aidan O'Brien

Jockey -

The rank outsider is Norway at 100/1 and this son of Galileo has never lived up to his potential this season being a very smart juvenile.

This season he has not ran to a good standard being at the back of the field in some decent races, however his latest third in the Irish Derby was encouraging but he will need to step up massively again.
