Longines Hong Kong International Preview

The Longines Hong Kong International race day is fast approaching as the worlds best race horses, jockeys and trainers head to Sha Tin to contest one of the most expensive race days on the International circuit with more than £8.5m of prize money up for grabs on Sunday. In this preview we will be previewing the Hong Kong Mile, Hong Kong Sprint, Hong Kong Vase and then the showpiece event, The Hong Kong Cup. But first we will start off by talking a look at the Hong Kong Mile.

Hong Kong Mile

The Hong Kong mile looks to be one of the most fiercely contested races of the day and we don’t expect it to disappoint. We’re taking a real liking to BEAUTY ONLY to come out on top. The Group 2 winner has had a successful season so far with him winning one of his three Group 2 races and placing in the other two. In his last six races he has finished outside just once and we believe that odds of 8/1 are just too good to resist. His trainer Tony Cruz has said:“The fast ground will suit him more than the track he struck last time. Last time, there seemed to be give in the ground, because it was a newly laid down winter grass. It was very loose and there was a lot of kickback. This Sunday will be much tighter.” Get him at a tempting 8/1 at Coral HERE.

Hong Kong Sprint

Now this is a really intriguing race and we’ve put our neck on the line and gone for a big outsider. The Richard Fahey trained GROWL has been a standout improver on English shores this season and we’re backing him to cause a massive upset over in Hong Kong. After finishing 2nd in the British Champion Stakes at Royal Ascot, the 4-y-o Dr Marwan Koukash then went on to win the Wentworth Stakes at Doncaster to enhance his credentials for this sprint showpiece at Sha Tin. He’s won of three of his last six races over 6f placing in the other three and we fully believe that he can challenge at 66/1. Get this cracking price at Bet365 HERE.

Hong Kong Vase

It’s a pretty one way market for this with the Breeders Cup Turf winner HIGHLAND REEL the firm favourite. But, we are fancying another outsider in BIG ORANGE. He was won two and placed in two of his four runs over a mile and a half and is a duel Group 2 winner this summer. Another factor why we’re leaning towards the 5-y-o gelding is due to his well suited draw in stall 7. There’s no doubting that the one to beat is Highland Reel, but Big Orange at 12s is too good to resist. Get these cracking odds at Bet365 HERE.

Hong Kong Cup

Now for the big one, the Hong Kong Cup. To say it is a competitive race is an understatement but it looks like it will mainly come down to two horses, A Shin Hikari and Maurice. A Shin Hikari looked a thoroughly promising type winning all five of his first five races but since then he has won five of his last ten races with his most recent outing a disappointing one where he finished 12th behind Maurice and that’s who we are tipping for this showpiece event. The Japanese gelding has won six of his last eight races placing in the other two which included a massive FIVE Group 1 wins, he is also 2/2 at Sha Tin. You can get MAURICE best priced 11/8 at Coral HERE.
