King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes Preview

This weekend sees one of the most highly anticipated races on the flat racing calendar as Ascot hosts the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes!

We were rocked with the news on Wednesday that odds on favourite POSTPONED had been withdrawn from the race due to a bad scope which has since thrown the betting right out into the open with The Queens DARTMOUTH now installed as favourite and we believe rightly so. The colt, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, has been in imperious form this season with three wins out of three including a thoroughly impressive performance in the Hardwicke Stakes last month where he defied the 10/1 odds to get up to win by a head to fellow King George entry HIGHLAND REEL. Dartmouth will be looking to become Sir Michael Stoute’s SIXTH winner in this race since his first in 1981 when SHERGAR galloped away to win by four lengths in what was an incredible season for the horse. With the withdrawal of Postponed, the race is now wide open and the likes of Highland Reel and Wings Of Desire will be a huge threat to Dartmouth but if he continues his form from this season, he will be pretty tough to beat.

For each way money, we’re really liking the look of SECOND STEP who is currently trading at around 33/1. Trained by last years winning trainer Luca Cumani, the five year old gelding has run three times this season losing on all three occasions but showing plenty of promise over a mile and a half most recently in the Princess Of Wales’s Arqana Racing Club Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month and we reckon that 33/1 could quite well end up been quality place money.
