Irish Group Racing Preview

There is some competitive flat racing in Ireland this weekend. Cork and Curragh share three Group races between them. Here are our top tips from across the Irish sea.

Saturday 4:10 Cork

The Group 3 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Give Thanks Stakes for Fillies and Mares over 1m 4f can go to the Aiden O’Brien trained CURLY.

The three-year-old is thoroughly unexposed having only had the three runs. She was chucked straight into a Group 3 in her last run, and despite finishing last of the four runners there was plenty to like about her performance.

Her best work was done at the end of the race that day and the extra 3f in this race looks sure to benefit the Filly. She can reverse the form with Turret Rocks and add to O’Brien’s already ridiculous haul of Pattern race victories.

Sun 3:35 Curragh

The biggest race in Ireland this weekend is the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes. This 6f sprint looks winnable for in-form ADVERTISE.

The two-year-old won on debut before coming second at Royal Ascot. The Colt won his group that day, going down by only a length to Calyx in the Coventry Stakes. The Martyn Meade trained runner got off the mark in group company at Newmarket last month in which was his third and most recent win.

Improvement is still a distinct possibility and he can overcome a huge army of runners entered by Aiden O’Brien and add another black type race to his CV.

Smash Williams

SMASH WILLIAMS can get his head in front in the Qatar Racing & Equestrian Club Phoenix Stakes. This Group 3 is full of exposed and unpredictable sorts.

The Jim Bolger trained Gelding came second in a Group 3 similar to this at Leopardstown in June. Smash Williams also held his own in a Group 2 race last time out at this track.

If running up to his current mark he can most certainly hit the frame again. With over 35,000 euros to the winner, it is certainly a prize worth having.
