Hennessy Gold Cup Day Preview
Hennessy Gold Cup Preview
The Hennessy Gold Cup returns to Newbury this weekend. The Grade 3 event, which is open to horses aged four or older, is run over a distance of around 3miles and consists of 20 high-class chasers. In the past, we’ve had some memorable horses run out victors, with names such as Arkle, Burrough Hill Lad & Grand National winner Many Clouds all cementing their place in history.
This year looks a hotly contested event, with ante-post favourite Native River currently leading the way in the market at around 5/1. For us however, Nigel Twiston-Davies trained BLACKLION & last year’s winner SMAD PLACE is where the value lies. The latter absolutely romped home last year, going twelve lengths clear of a smart Tizzard gelding in THEATRE GUIDE. He may be higher in the weights, but the Alan King trained grey has won a Grade 2 event off a higher mark and looks poised to be right in the mix come Saturday. To add to this, he goes fine on soft ground, so there won’t be any worries if the rain falls. Currently best priced at 10/1 to win with SkyBet HERE!
BLACKLION looks another strong selection for the Gold Cup. Following Grade 1 & 2 victories last season he shook off some cobwebs in the Charlie Hall Chase at the end of October, finishing 5th. We do expect some progression from this, but ending up 5l behind CUE CARD, who went on to thrash the field in the Betfair Chase should hold him in good stead as his drops down a couple of grades this weekend. Ryan Hatch has built a strong relationship with this horse, and with the run in the bag we are expecting an encouraging ride. Currently best priced at 10/1 with BetBright HERE!
