Distances In Horse Racing

Betting On Distances

Thanks to Sport Nation we have a detailed visual description of distances in horse racing.

Horse races are distinguished by different distances. Jumps racing tends to normally have longer distanced races to the flat. On the flat races vary from 5f to over 2 miles. The longest flat race in the UK is the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot which is over 2 miles and 6 furlongs. Jumps races vary as well and can be as long as 4 miles.

When someone is talking about horse racing and refers to a ‘furlong’ this means 1/8 of a mile. There are therefore 8 furlongs in a mile.

When it comes to winning distances, this is measured in lengths. 1 length is from the nose to the tail of the horse.
